Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, had to battle two storms from the north in game one of a three-game series-the unusual snow blanket across the city, and the returning Kelly Cup champions, the Alaska Aces. Victoria outscored Alaska in the third period, but could not recover from the deficit as the Aces iced the win 6-1.

In their third powerplay of the game, the Aces took a 1-0 lead at 9:58 into the first. Centre Olivier Filion fired a shot past Netminder Julien Ellis from the right point for his eighth goal of the season. With 31 seconds remaining in the first, Defenseman Patrick Wellar found the mesh behind a screened Ellis for an Aces 2-0 advantage heading into the second period.

Alaska froze the Salmon Kings in the second stanza and potted four goals. Filion earned his second of the game 28 seconds into the period. Joe Talbot posted two goals at the 8:53 and 10:21 marks in the second, one in a turnaround slapshot off a rebound, and the next from alone on the right of the crease. Rookie Gino Guyer notched his second goal of the season, capitalizing on a fortunate bounce off a Florian Iberer shot.

The Salmon Kings outshot the Aces 11-9 in the third period and cracked the crease of Goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu. At 9:37 into the final period, Warren McCutcheon fed the puck from the left boards to Kiel McLeod down low, and McLeod slid into the slot and went farside top shelf on Beckford-Tseu for his sixth powerplay goal of the season.

Final score: 6-1 Aces

Beckford-Tseu tallied his fourth win of the season, and Ellis suffered his third loss. Victoria was 1 for 9 on the powerplay and Alaska went 1 for 6 with the man advantage. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 28-23. Victoria (7-8-1) and Alaska (9-7-0) will clash on Friday for game two of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
