Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Salem, VA - Winston-Salem's offensive woes continued as Salem received a strong start from Kevin Weiland in blanking the Dash 7-0 in the series opener on Monday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Weiland (6-9) worked six shutout innings and only allowed two hits. He also struck out a career-high ten batters and collected his sixth win of the season.

It was the second consecutive shutout loss for Winston-Salem, who has failed to score a run in their last 18 innings. They also struck out a season-high 15 times.

The Red Sox broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs off Anthony Carter. Mike Jones reached second with one out when his grounder deflected off the glove of first baseman Seth Loman for a double. Brad Correll, a 28-year-old free agent who is with his fourth Carolina League team, smacked a two-run home run to put Salem in front 2-0. It was the 17th home run allowed by Carter, which leads the league.

Winston-Salem unraveled in the bottom of the seventh inning as Salem broke the game open with five runs (four unearned). Chih-Hsien Chiang reached on a leadoff walk by Ryan Rote and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt. One out later, Zach Borowiak delivered and RBI single through a drawn-in infield to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Che-Hsuan Lin walked and Aaron Reza reached on another Dash error to load the bases. Rote uncorked back-to-back wild pitches that brought two more runs across before being pulled from the game. Nate Jones entered out of the bullpen and was greeted with back-to-back RBI singles by Anthony Rizzo and Tim Federowicz to give Salem a 7-0 lead.

The Red Sox bullpen went the final three innings as Armando Zerpa worked two perfect frames with three strikeouts and Robert Coello recorded the final three outs to preserve the shutout. Carter (11-7) tossed five innings and held Salem to two runs on six hits to take the loss.

The Dash and Red Sox continue their four-game series on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Winston-Salem will send LHP Justin Edwards (5-2, 4.26) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Dave McKae (2-6, 4.93). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
