Frederick Keys News Release

The Frederick Keys blew an early four-run lead on Monday night, but were able to comeback to defeat the Kinston Indians 7-4.

The Keys jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second. With one man down, LF Tyler Henson lined a ball to right field. It dropped in for a base hit. Kinston RF Roman Pena over-ran the ball, allowing it to get by him. It was ruled a single and an error on Pena that allowed Henson to get into second. Back-to-back wild pitches scored Henson, giving Frederick a 1-0 lead.

Frederick extended their lead in the third. With one on and one down, SS Pedro Florimon drilled a two-run homer to left-center. The very next batter, 3B Brandon Waring, then cracked his 25th long ball of the season. The back-to-back round-trippers gave the Keys a 4-0 lead.

Kinston got on the scoreboard in the third. LF Lucas Montero hit a solo homerun, making it 4-1.

Following the homerun, Frederick RHP Kenny Moreland retired the next 11 batters he faced. He exited after allowing just the one run on two hits in six innings of work.

RHP Joe Esposito came into the ball game to pitch the seventh and struggled. With one man out, he surrendered back-to-back walks to 1B Doug Pickens and 3B Adam Davis. SS Ron Rivas was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for C Alex Castillo. The Kinston backstop came trough with a two-run single, pulling the Indians to within one.

Esposito was pulled in favor of LHP Jake Stevens. With runners on the corners and one down, RF Roman Pena lifted a sac fly to center, tying the contest at four.

The Keys took the lead once again in the top of the ninth. With one man down, RHP Santo Frias surrendered back-to-back walks to 2B Bobby Stevens and C Billy Killian. CF Matt Angle then singled. Kinston went back to the bullpen, bringing in RHP Kyle Landis with the bases loaded. He immediately walked Florimon, knocking in Stevens, and giving the Keys a 5-4 lead. Landis then balked, knocking in Killian. The K-Tribe elected to intentionally walk Waring, re-loading the bases for 1B Robbie Widlansky. He grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Angle, and making it 7-4.

Stevens (1-1) got the win. He pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings. Frias (0-2) took the loss after surrendering three runs in 1.1 innings of work. RHP Brandon Cooney recorded the final three outs for his fourth save of the season.
