Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Ryan Eigsti's fourth inning grand slam sparked Wilmington to a 7-3 victory over Lynchburg at City Stadium Monday night. The Hillcats will attempt to even the four-game series at a game apiece on Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.

Wilmington (36-20, 74-51) jumped out to an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Derrick Robinson singled off Cats starter Bryan Morris to start the game and promptly stole second base. Johnny Giavotella followed with a single the drove in Robinson. Giavotella advanced to third on a wild pitch from Morris and scored on an RBI groundout by Mike Moustakas that made it a 2-0 contest.

Morris appeared to settle down after the first as he retired the Blue Rocks in order in the second and third innings.

But the Blue Rocks tagged Morris for four runs in the fourth. Clint Robinson singled to start the frame and Morris issued a walk to Nick Van Stratten. After Morris retired Jamar Walton, Chase Fontaine drew a walk to load the bases for Eigsti, who belted Morris' 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam that extended Wilmington's lead to 6-0. Eigsti's blast is just the second home run allowed by Morris in his 13 starts with Lynchburg.

Lynchburg (24-33, 69-57) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Hague smacked a solo home run off Wilmington starter Eduardo Paulino, which made it a 6-1 game.

The Cats drew closer with a run in the fifth. Eric Fryer hit a leadoff double and Jose De Los Santos followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners with no outs. Fryer scored later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Josh Harrison, which reduced the deficit to 6-2.

Wilmington tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Moustakas crushed a solo home run off Cats reliever Mike Colla.

Trailing 7-2 in the ninth, the Cats pushed a run across when Moustakas committed a pair of errors, the second of which enabled Alex Presley to score, ending the night for Blue Rocks reliever Mario Santiago. But Zach Peterson struck out Harrison to end the game and seal Wilmington's 7-3 victory.

Paulino (9-6) limited Lynchburg to two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work and picked up the win. Morris (4-7) was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits, six earned runs and four walks in five innings pitched. Peterson earned his second save for the Blue Rocks.

Lynchburg and Wilmington will square off in game two of the four-game series at City Stadium Tuesday night. The Cats will send RHP Ronald Uviedo (5-5, 3.53 ERA) to the mound. The Blue Rocks are expected to start LHP Danny Duffy (8-3, 3.22 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
