Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (August 24, 2009) - No matter how much a team is struggling, a nonpareil outing from a starting pitcher can swing momentum in a hurry. The Red Sox received a superb effort from Kyle Weiland, as the righthander became the first Sox starter in 2009 to reach double figures in strikeouts in a single outing, setting the tone to Salem's 7-0 shutout victory over Winston-Salem. Weiland K'd ten Dash over six scoreless innings, allowing just two singles and earning his third straight victory to improve to 6-9. Armando Zerpa threw two perfect frames out of the pen, whiffing three, while Robert Coello pitched around a walk and a single in the ninth, striking out the final two batters he faced to preserve the triumph for the Red Sox.
Winston-Salem starter Anthony Carter took the loss to fall to 11-7, despite giving up just two runs in five innings. The two teams played scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when Mike Jones doubled down the right field line and Brad Correll belted a two-strike pitch over the wall in left to make it 2-0. Correll's second homer as a Red Sock, a crushed rising line drive that barely cleared the 20-foot wall in the outfield, gave Salem a lead they would not relinquish.
Although the Sox would not need any more offense, they broke it open with a huge bottom of the seventh. Ironically, after scoring five runs all series over the weekend against Potomac, the Red Sox scored five times on three hits, three walks, and a pivotal error by Dash second baseman Dale Mollenhauer. Zach Borowiak contributed an RBI single, as did Anthony Rizzo and Tim Federowicz. Salem also scored a pair of runs on wild pitches tossed by Ryan Rote, who allowed all five runs (one earned) in just two-thirds of an inning.
Correll, Rizzo, and Federowicz each finished with multiple hits for the Red Sox, who moved into a three-way tie for the wild card spot with Kinston and Myrtle Beach.
Salem's eight-game, seven-day homestand continues on Tuesday night with Dave McKae opposing Justin Edwards in the second game of the four-game set against Winston-Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
