Saints Squander Three Run Lead Lose 4-3 to Lemurs

LAREDO, TX - The St. Paul Saints had numerous opportunities to blow the game wide open on Saturday night at Uni-Trade Stadium, but they couldn't come up with the big hits. They left 12 men on base and saw a 3-0 lead after five innings disappear as they lost 4-3 to the Laredo Lemurs dropping to 12-5 on the season and 4-2 on their franchise longest 14 game roadtrip.

The Saints struck first in the second as Mike Gilmartin and Tanner Vavra opened up the inning with singles. Maxx Garrett sacrificed them over and with two outs Alonzo Harris came through with a two-run single to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth Harris struck again with a leadoff homer to left, his third of the season, to make it 3-0. Harris finished 3-5 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. The Saints appeared to be on their way to scoring multiple runs in the inning when Brady Burzynski and Nate Hanson singled and Angelo Songco was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Tony Thomas, however, struck out and Gilmartin grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Lemurs had their chances against Saints starter Robert Coe who wasn't sharp all night, but found ways to pitch out of numerous jams. In the second he loaded the bases with one out on a walk, double and a walk, but he got Jesus Posso to ground into an inning ending double play.

In the third he walked Ty Morrison to lead off the inning, but he was thrown out trying to steal. Coe then walked the J.D. Pulfer, but managed to get two ground outs to end the inning.

In the fourth he loaded the bases again with one out on a double and two walks, but Posso lined a shot back to the mound that Coe caught and threw to first for the double play.

In the fifth Coe's luck would run out although it was the first inning he didn't walk a batter. Morrison led off with a triple and scored on a groundout off the bat of J.D. Pulfer to make it 3-1. With two outs Denis Phipps hit a solo homer to left, his first of the season, to make it 3-2. Coe went 5.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking seven.

In the sixth the Lemurs took the lead for good against reliever Caleb Thielbar. Abel Nieves grounded one over the glove of a diving Songco at first for a single. With one out and a man at second Reggie Wilson reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners. Posso, who was 2-27 on the season, finally found a hole and singled to left to tie the game at three. With two outs Pulfer, a .194 hitter, singled home Wilson to give the Lemurs the lead.

The Saints had a chance in the eighth when Vavra singled and Garrett walked. Sam Maus sacrificed them over to put runners at second and third. Harris struck out for the second out of the inning. The Lemurs elected to walk rookie Burzynski to face the veteran Hanson and proved to be the right decision as Jeff Inman struck out Hanson on three pitches to end the inning.

Tony Thomas doubled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to a career high 16.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. at Uni-Trade Stadium. The Saints are TBA while the Lemurs send RHP Danny Moskovits (1-0, 3.00). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
