LINK GOES THE DISTANCE
The Wichita Wingnuts got their first complete game of the 2016 season Friday night as Jon Link went the full nine to lead the home team to a comfortable 6-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Link allowed a hit in each of the first three frames, but then began a run of 11 straight batters retired with a double play. The lone run the righty surrendered on the night came in the seventh, as the RailCats greeted the veteran with a pair of doubles. However, Link recovered with another double play to escape further damage. On the other side, Wichita got their starter the lead in the second. Brent Dean broke the early scoreless deadlock, plating two with a single. The Wingnuts then added single runs in each of the next two frames as T.J. Mittelstaedt and Christian Stringer each drove in a run to make it 4-0. Wichita finished off the night's scoring in the bottom of the seventh, as Brent Clevlen and Dustin Geiger each brought in a run with a single. Gary put up a threat in the ninth with back-to-back two-out knocks, but Link was able to slam the door on the RailCats.
FAMILIAR TERRITORY
Jon Link's complete game last night was the first complete game for Wichita this season, and the first since the right-hander tossed a complete game at Gary on May 25, 2014. The two starts against the RailCats were very similar, as Link allowed one run (although the run was unearned in his 2014 outing) on eight hits in both starts, while collecting four strikeouts. The complete game was the sixth of Link's professional career, four of which have come with the Wingnuts.
AMONG THE LEADERS
Outfielder Harrison Kain owns the top batting average on the Wingnuts at .377, currently the second-highest mark in the league...Leo Vargas also cracks the league's top 10 hitters, coming in at .341...T.J. Mittelstaedt leads the American Association in a couple of categories, having walked 18 times which has led to a .507 on-base percentage...Mittelstaedt also cracks the top five in doubles (7, 2nd), extra-base hits (10, 3rd), and slugging percentage (.642, 5th). Brent Dean has seven steals so far, good for a tie for fourth in the AA.
