Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Gary SouthShore Railcats plated six runs in the first inning and cruised from there on their way to an 8-3 win over the Wichita Wingnuts Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Wichita starter Anthony Capra (0-1) struggled right from the outset Saturday, walking the first two he faced. A pair of singles later, Gary (8-9) had their first run. After a sacrifice fly made it 2-0, the wheels came off for Capra and the Wingnuts. The southpaw walked four straight, with the last three of those coming with the bases loaded. Masato Fukae then hit an infield single to cap the six-run frame, a play which also saw Capra come up limping afterwards, which caused his removal from the game.
Outside of the six-run first, Wichita (6-10) got a great effort from their bullpen. Alex Boshers worked a season-high four and a third innings in relief of Capra, allowing just a fifth inning run on a Brennan Metzger single.
Jesse Pratt followed Boshers and worked three innings, striking out a season-high three and allowing just an eighth inning solo homer to Jose Sermo. Chase Johnson made his first appearance since his return to the club in the ninth, working a scoreless frame.
The Wingnuts offense had plenty of scoring opportunities, but struggled to get the most out of their chances. Harrison Kain picked up an RBI single in the fourth and T.J. Mittelstaedt added a run-producing knock for his team-leading 13th RBI of the year in the seventh, but Wichita stranded a season-high tying 14 runners on base, 10 of which were scoring position.
The home team's final tally of the night came in the ninth when Brent Clevlen led off with a solo homer, his third long ball of the year, which tied him for the club lead with Mittelstaedt.
The Wingnuts and RailCats conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita will send veteran right-hander Tim Brown (1-0, 3.68) to the hill, while the RailCats will counter with fellow righty Richard Castillo (1-1, 5.74). First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
