Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa - Having won two games in a row for the first time in the new year, the Dubuque Fighting Saints headed west down Route 20 to take on the rival Waterloo Black Hawks. The Black Hawks opened the season with a 9-7-2 record, but then found themselves in dire straits, losing their next eight games. Since that streak was snapped, Waterloo had compiled a 2-1-2 record, and they sat just two points out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference heading into Friday's game.
The Fighting Saints struck twice in the first period. Off a turnover, Brooks Bertsch scored to give the Saints the lead early on in the period. John Doherty struck later in the frame for the Saints, taking the puck from Shane Walsh and beating CJ Motte to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Despite being outshot 13-6 in the first period, the Saints took the lead into the locker room after one.
The Black Hawks found the back of the net early in the third as Blake Thompson cleared a puck into the zone that took a funny bounce off the boards and eluded Matt Morris. The Saints answered three times over, however. Scott Wamsganz, playing at his former home rink scored one for the Saints assisted by Joakim Ryan and Tyler Ameburgey. John Gaudreau scored an unassisted goal minutes later, and Nick Luukko added another tally to push the game to a five to one lead for the Saints at the end of the second period.
Aaron Pearce scored in the third period to cut the lead to 5-2, but it was not nearly enough as the Saints won by that margin. The Saints return to the ice tomorrow night against the RoughRiders in Cedar Rapids. Patrick Murray has the call on Dubuque's Super Hits 106 and superhits106.com. Pregame starts at 6:35.
