Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

Youngstown, Ohio - The Muskegon Lumberjacks shook off a little bit of déjà vu to knock off the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 in a shootout at the Covelli Centre on Friday night.

Ty Loney scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season for the Phantoms (13-19-3 - 29 points, sixth place in the Eastern Conference) with just 34 seconds left to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime. But after a scoreless extra session, the Jacks tallied three markers in the shootout to Youngstown's two, with Joel Vienneau making a game-ending save on Scott Mayfield in the last of the fifth round.

Vienneau, a Hearst, Ontario, native committed to the University of Minnesota, stopped 31 of 34 shots, including all 13 he faced in the second period, to pick up his 11th win of the season.

The Phantoms struck first when Adam Berkle scored on the power play just 2:28 into the opening frame. Matt Berry, a right winger from Canton, Mich., who is committed to Michigan State University, drew the Jacks even with his team-leading 16th goal just 38 seconds into the second period. It was set up by a brilliant slap pass to the back door from the right-side point by defenseman Mark Yanis. Jacks captain John Parker picked up the secondary assist.

Isaac Kohls gave the Jacks their first lead when he buried a centering pass from Travis Belohrad two minutes into the third. But Andrew Sinelli tied things up on the short hand at the midway point of the third. About four minutes later, Mike Conderman tickled the twine with a low-angle wrister that beat Greg Lewis glove side. Alexx Privitera picked up the lone assist.

Loney tied the game in the final minute, reminiscent of Jiri Sekac's game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory on Saturday, Jan. 8. But the Jacks buckled down, with Belohrad, Berry and Conderman scoring in succession in the middle rounds. Loney made the shootout tally 3-2 by scoring in the last of the fourth round, but Vienneau made a pad save on Mayfield to seal the win in the last of the fifth.

The Jacks snapped a six-game winless streak on the road, as well as Youngstown's three-game point streak.

The Jacks and Phantoms will wrap up a home-and-home series at the L.C. Walker Arena on Saturday night. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. and the radio broadcast opens with the AT&T Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. It will be Mullet Night at theaArena, and comedian Donnie Baker will be the Grand Mullet. One lucky, mullet-rocking fan will win a prize package from SportClips and the Lumberjacks.
