Waterloo, IA - The Waterloo Bucks, a member of the Northwoods League, have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Nathan Slater to their roster for the 2011 season. Slater is currently a junior at the University of California-Davis.

The 6'6", 205-pound pitcher made 14 appearances in 2009, including four starts. Slater went 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA. He struck out 19 hitters in 28.2 innings, allowing a .243 batting average. In his first collegiate start, after redshirting during his freshman year, Slater went seven innings with five hits, two earned runs, and five strikeouts.

Born October 18, 1988, Slater played last summer in the West Coast League for the Kelowna Falcons. The southpaw started four games for Kelowna, finishing the season with a 1-2 record and a 2.25 ERA with 18 strikeouts.

"Nathan had a good summer in the WCL, and in our discussions with Coach Tony Schifano at UC-Davis, Nathan will be one of the Aggies' top pitchers this year," said Bucks General Manager Dan Corbin. "He has a good frame, velocities in the high 80's, and has some excellent off-speed pitches. We project Nathan to be drafted here in the near future."

Originally from Fresno, California, the economics major is the son of Mark and Lisa Slater. He was voted Rookie of the Year as a sophomore at Fresno High School, was a four-year honor roll member, and graduated first in his class.

The Bucks will open the 2011 season on the road at the Battle Creek Bombers on June 1. Waterloo's home opener is scheduled for Saturday, June 4 at 6:35 pm versus the Eau Claire Express. Season tickets and single-game tickets are currently on sale. Fans are encouraged to stay in touch with the Bucks in the off-season by utilizing their website at www.waterloobucks.com.
