Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
Youngstown, Ohio - Donnie Baker strutted onstage with a few Budweisers in one hand and a two-liter of Mountain Dew in the other.
These two delicious beverages would become "hillbilly Jaeger bombs," most of which Baker spilled on his "Pork Star" T-shirt throughout his performance at the Annex Comedy Theater at the L.C. Walker Arena Friday night.
Baker's redneck wit, tales of unfaithful ex-girlfriends, lyrically re-tooled cover songs and jokes about his "pork sword" kept the audience hootin' and hollerin' from start to finish.
Clad in his cartoonish red and black tiger-striped zubaz and a trucker's cap slung backward to protect his glorious mullet, Baker gregariously laid out a redneck comedy buffet of jokes that Larry the Cable Guy would have been proud of.
The show kicked off with Baker's guitarist and life-long best friend, Scotty Winkler, strumming a cover of Leonard Skynard's "Simple Man" as Baker lamented the state of the economy as well as the fact that the duo had to let the other members of their band go due to lack of talent, fondness for booze and a plethora of problems that ironically didn't involve the economy's current funk.
Baker then riffed about how he always gets mistaken for Kid Rock when he comes to Michigan and struck up a sordid back-and-forth with two female hecklers who clamored for the comedian's attention for the remainder of the evening.
He did well not to get drawn too far off course by the two ladies and consistently summoned hearty laughs from the sizeable crowd by jabbing the two with stock, frat-house quips such as, "two shots of Jaeger and I won't even have to bag her."
As the show wore on, Baker went to his bread and butter as he sang numerous re-worked covers of classic rock standards. He offered dirty stories about past girlfriends and his boyish attempts to settle past sexual transgressions committed against him by becoming the man who "made it with her on a Skee-ball thinger. And it was so good the tickets started popping out! Must have had nine yards of tickets and that paid for Christmas right there."
While gargling beer and hacking up Jacks-Links Beef Nuggets, Baker told a story of how he was born in a strip joint and tossed out some jokes about a couple local establishments that he hadn't found up to his standards when it came to the creativity of the staff's performances. This drew rounds of whoops and cat calls from the audience, who enjoyed Donnie's crass comedy as much as he loved sharing it with them.
As good comedians do, he sealed his bond with the audience with some extra material preformed with an added zeal, causing his two biggest fans to scream out comments that caused Baker to laugh while inhaling a mouthful of beer.
With hands on his knees and warm suds running down his red face Baker joined in with the audience as the entire room barked, laughed and high-fived.
He exited the stage to rapturous applause but not before asking the crowd where the best bar in town to grab a drink was. As he signed autographs for the fans, it was clear that the party was a hit for everyone who turned out.
