Saints Silence Storm Chasers Bats in 3-1 Victory

OMAHA, NE - No team had won three in a row at Werner Park this season against the Omaha Storm Chasers. The St. Paul Saints took care of that in the first three games of the series. The Saints did something else no other team had done this season on Saturday night: win a series. The Saints pitchers dominated the top hitting team in Triple-A East with a 3-1 victory, assuring the series victory with one more game to go on Sunday. The win improves the Saints to 37-33 and they are now 4.5 games out of first place.

Saints starter Andrew Albers was magnificent retiring the first six hitters he faced. In the third, with a man on at first and two outs, Edward Olivares doubled to put runners at second and third. Albers got Bobby Witt Jr. to ground out to end the inning.

The game remained scoreless into the fourth when the Storm Chasers scored their lone run as Kyle McBroom singled to left with one out. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to the right of second base by Kyle Isbel putting the Storm Chasers up 1-0. Albers went 5.2 innings allowing one run on six hits while walking one and striking out six.

In the sixth the Saints tied it courtesy of Drew Maggi. Jake Newberry, who gave up the tying home run in the ninth to Maggi on Tuesday, was victimized again by Maggi who hit a solo homer to left, his career tying high 11th of the season, tying it at one.

In the seventh the Saints took the lead as Roberto Peña led off with a walk. Jose Miranda blooped a single into right that put runners at first and second. Rob Refnsyder hit a comebacker that went in and out of the glove of Newberry preventing him from a potential double play as he recorded the out at first. Tomás Telis then singled off the glove of Newberry into center field scoring a pair of runs and putting the Saints up 3-1.

The Saints bullpen did the rest as Kyle Barraclough went 1.1 scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out one.

Jovani Moran finished it off by hurling 2.0 scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out three and picking up his first save at Triple-A.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Griffin Jax (4-1, 3.09) against Storm Chasers LHP Jake Kalish (1-2, 8.85). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
