DUBUQUE, IA - Fighting Saints defenseman Seamus Powell has announced his commitment to play Division I hockey at Merrimack College.

Powell has been a force offensively so far from the Saints' blue line. His 11 points are tied for fourth among USHL defensemen this season. He has been extremely effective running one of the Saints power-play units. Seven of his 11 points have come on the man advantage as have both of his goals this season.

"Since Seamus has arrived in Dubuque, he has contributed in every situation on the ice while also providing a high level of character and leadership to our group," said head coach Kirk MacDonald. "We are very happy for him and can't wait to see what he can do at the college level next season."

Powell returned to the USHL this season after spending last year playing for former Saints head coach Greg Brown at Boston College. Prior to his time with Boston College, Powell played for the United States NTDP team in the USHL for two seasons.

Coming back to the league to play for Dubuque, Powell joined an experienced defense corps, in which he was the lone player with college experience.

Powell will return to Hockey East after his time in Dubuque, this time playing for the Warriors.
