WATERLOO, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (12-2-1-2, 27 pts) stormed back from down 3-0 to beat the Waterloo Black Hawks (6-8-0-0, 12 pts) 6-5 on Friday night.
With just 1:05 left in the third period, Nick Romeo scored his second goal of the night, and his USHL career, to give the Saints a 6-5 lead.
That goal came after Dubuque fell behind 3-0 in the first period. The Saints had a chance to grab some momentum with a late power play in the first period. With 2.3 seconds left in the period, Noah Powell scored his second of the season on a rebound to get Dubuque on the board.
Then, 2:02 into the second frame, Erik Påhlsson scored a short-handed goal to bring the Saints within one. It was Påhlsson's first of two in the game. Påhlsson leads the Saints with 12 goals and the USHL with 25 points. His first goal extended his point streak to nine games.
Just past the halfway mark in regulation, Romeo took a pass from Fisher Scott right in front of Waterloo's net. In just his fifth USHL game, Romeo brought the puck between his legs and shot it past Waterloo goaltender Jack Spicer, tying the game at three. It was Romeo's first USHL goal.
After Påhlsson's second of the night early in the third, Waterloo answered to tie the game at four and then take a 5-4 lead. Michael Barron's seventh of the season came just 20 seconds after Waterloo's fifth tally.
Kevin Reidler stood strong under a barrage all night. He faced 39 shots in his ninth win of the season, stopping 34 of them. Reidler featured timely saves as well as acrobatic saves in the victory.
The Fighting Saints are back on the ice on Saturday night in Cedar Rapids for a matchup with the RoughRiders.
