Saints Rally Sinks Hawks

September 27, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A three-point performance by Seamus Malone - including the game-winning goal Friday - allowed the Dubuque Fighting Saints to upend the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-2 at Young Arena.

Malone's shot from the left dot with 4:53 remaining went over Cal Petersen's shoulder and under the crossbar, breaking a 2-2 tie. The second-year Dubuque center had helped his team draw even five minutes earlier, creating a power play scoring chance, which Karson Kuhlman converted from between the hash marks.

During the opening 20 minutes, Malone and Kuhlman also connected; 18:14 into the action, Malone's shot led to a rebound which Kuhlman flipped across the goal line. Waterloo tied the game 14 seconds later on a strange bounce. When a dump-in sprang off the glass in the right wing corner and across the goalmouth, it left Austin Vieth with a wide open net to shoot into.

Blake Winiecki scored on the other side of intermission, taking the puck away while challenging two Dubuque defenders and scoring high to the glove side on Hayden Stewart. The Fighting Saint rookie stopped 31 other Waterloo shots, while Petersen made 32 saves.

Next Saturday, the Black Hawks meet another Eastern Conference team for the second home game of the year. Tickets are on sale now for the October 5th matchup against the Youngstown Phantoms. Call the box office at (319) 291-7680 for more details or order online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
