Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- The Dubuque Fighting Saints started their quest to defend the Clark and Anderson Cups in grand fashion. Seamus Malone scored the game-winning goal with under five minutes remaining in the third period to give Dubuque a 3-2 win over the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup rival Black Hawks Friday Night at the Young Arena in Waterloo. Malone had three points and Karson Kuhlman added a pair of goals in the victory.
With under two minutes to play in the game's opening frame, Dubuque's Kuhlman opened the game's scoring and struck for the team's first goal of the 2013-2014 season. Dubuque cycled the puck to the left wing where forward Seamus Malone blasted a slapshot on net. The shot was turned aside by Waterloo goaltender Cal Petersen, but the rebound popped loose and Kuhlman beat everyone to it, and flipped a backhander over Petersen to make it 1-0 Dubuque at 18:14.
Dubuque's lead would only last 14 seconds courtesy of a bad break. Before Kuhlman's goal could even be announced, Waterloo shot a dump in wide of the Dubuque net. The puck hit the right side end boards and popped right to the slot where Waterloo's Austin Vieth was standing. Dubuque netminder Hayden Stewart was strong in the first period, but the goaltender had no time to prepare because of the bad bounce, and Vieth flipped a shot right over his glove to tie the game at 18:28.
Waterloo would get the lone goal of a penalty filled second period at the 5:24 mark. Waterloo's Blake Winiecki brought the puck up ice one-on-three and lost it to the Dubuque defense. Winiecki stayed with the play and stripped the puck from Alexx Privitera. Winiecki spun and fired a wrist shot from the high slot that darted over Stewart's glove to give Waterloo a 2-1 lead.
The third period belonged to Dubuque. The Fighting Saints battled back and scored a pair of goals to claim the victory. Kuhlman tied the contest with his second goal of the game at the 10:12. Jarrid Privitera kept the puck in at the blueline with a fantastic effort to keep the play alive as Dubuque cycled the puck on the powerplay. Dubuque worked the puck to the boards, and Malone dished the puck from the right wing to Kuhlman in the slot. Kuhlman one-timed a shot that fluttered past Petersen to make it 2-2.
Dubuque finished off the comeback when Malone notched his third point of the night and the game-winner. Jordan Klimek flipped the puck up the ice and Malone won a foot race down the left wing. With Kuhlman charging the goal, Malone looked pass, but shot instead, firing the puck over Petersen's glove to give Dubuque the lead with 4:57 remaining.
Waterloo pressured late, but Stewart and the Saints stood tall. A goalmouth scramble with seconds remaining saw Stewart make a pair of fantastic saves while being knocked out of position to help preserve the win.
The Fighting Saints outshot Waterloo 35-34 in the game. Stewart stopped 32 shots to earn his first win as a Fighting Saint.
Tomorrow night the Dubuque Fighting Saints return home for Opening Night and a Championship Celebration presented by American Trust at 7:05 p.m. versus Sioux City. The Fighting Saints will raise the Anderson Cup and Clark Cup championship banners and the night will feature a pre-game ring ceremony. The first 3,000 fans also receive a magnetic schedule courtesy of American Trust. Tickets are available for Saturday's game by calling 563.583.6880 or visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
