Saints Named Second Hardest Working Team In The CHL

March 8, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

San Angelo, TX – The San Angelo Saints of the Central Hockey League are currently in a playoff hunt. This was evident this past week when the Saints took 5 out of 6 possible points against teams like Corpus Christi, Odessa and Colorado. The Saints started the week off with a 4 – 1 victory over the Rayz that saw the Saints dominate the game from the opening face off. The Saints then headed to Ector County Coliseum where the Jackalopes were hosting them Saturday night. What looked like was going to be another game the Saints would run away with, Odessa shut that down towards the end of the 1st period. The Saints had to rally back from being 2 goals down to tie the game at 3 and send it into overtime. Andrew Nahirniak put the game winning goal past Mike Gorman, after the Saints went up a man advantage on a holding call on BJ Adams. The Saints then returned home to host the league leading Colorado Eagles. The game started off with a bang, when Saints forward Trevor Weisgerber was able to slip the puck past Weiman, on a nice pass from defenseman Matt Frick, in the middle of the first period. Weisgerber would again light the lamp 4 minutes into the second period forcing Colorado to make changes to their lineup. The Eagles answered back with 2 minutes left in the second and 2 minutes into the third putting the game tied at 2-2. The game would eventually go into overtime and the Eagles would sneak away with a victory on a shot by Karlis Zirnis, giving the Colorado two points and the Saints a well needed one point in the standings. Currently the Saints sit in second place, one point behind the Amarillo Gorillas who have 65 points.

In other news, the Central Hockey League completed its Best of the Best poll, voted on by member team's PR departments and Coaching Staffs. The Saints were honored in 4 categories, including Best Goaltender, Best Defensive Defenseman, Best Coach and Hardest Working Team. Saints net-minder, Scott Reid took the third place honors for Best Goaltender, behind Colorado's Weiman and Bossier-Shreveport's Carroll. Matt Frick was honored as the second Best Defensive Defenseman behind Derek Martin of Lubbock. Ray Edwards took third place in the Best Coach Category with Scott Muscutt from the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs and Chris Dashney from the Lubbock Cotton Kings in front of him. The Saints were also named second in the Hardest Working Team category behind Bossier-Shreveport.
