Oakley CHL Player & Goaltender of the Week Announced
March 8, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Laredo right winger James Hiebert and Austin netminder Matt Barnes are the Week 20 recipients of the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week awards for Week 20 of the Central Hockey League season. Hiebert enjoyed two dominating performances in wins for the defending champion Bucks, while Barnes recorded his fourth shutout of the season in his only start for the Ice Bats.
Hiebert began his week with a single assist March 1st in a 3-0 home ice win over Lubbock, then led the Bucks to back-to-back road wins over Tulsa and Topeka. Friday evening, he recorded his first hat-trick of the season and added an assist in a 7-3 win at Tulsa. The following night he scored three points (two more goals and an assist) in a 4-2 win in Topeka. In his second season with Laredo, Hiebert has already surpassed his 2003-2004 totals with 17 goals and 34 assists on the season. With a record of 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, Laredo has moved into a tie with Austin atop the Southeast Division.
Barnes came through in the clutch for Austin this week, battling a severe case of the flu to post a 29-save 4-0 shutout at Fort Worth on Sunday March 6th. The shutout was his fourth of the season, moving him into sole possession of second place in the category behind Colorado's Tyler Weiman with eight. A two-time recipient of the Most Outstanding Goaltender award (2002-2003 CHL and 1999-2000 WPHL), Barnes has helped the Ice Bats to a share of the Southeast Division lead, and now has a total of 17 career CHL/WPHL shutouts, trailing only Rod Branch with 23.
