Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, TX - Goaltender Derek Dolson stopped 42 of 43 shots to lead the Odessa Jackalopes past the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-1 Tuesday night at the Dodge Arena, pushing the Bees home winless streak to a franchise high five games.
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees got off to a slow and sluggish start and the Jackalopes took advantage of it. Paul Davies cashed in with the opening goal for the Jackalopes 6:16 into the game by taking a loose puck away from Bees goaltender Jeff Levy and sliding it past him for the 1-0 advantage. Sebastien Thinel is the Jackalopes leading scorer in the all-time series against the Bees, but had been held without a point this season against the Bees until 11:42 into the game. Thinel was laying on the ice in the right slot after being tripped up from behind, but with the puck still in front of him, he was able to swat the puck with the shaft of his stick and slide the puck under Levy for the 2-0 lead. Rio Grande Valley closed out the period, which they were out-shot 15-9, with a little momentum, as Darcy Smith notched his second goal of the season and his first since December 3rd by firing a slap shot through the five-hole of Derek Dolson with 7.5-seconds remaining in the period.
Dolson came up huge for the Jacks' in the second period, stopping all 18 shots fired by the Bees. The Bees thought they tied the contest up in the period after a scrum in front of the net led the Bees knocking the puck past Dolson, but official Paul DePuydt lost site of the puck and did not award the Bees the tying goal, keeping the Jackalopes with a 2-1 lead through two periods.
The Bees continued their offensive pressure in the third period, out-shooting the Jackalopes 15-8, but Dolson continued to keep the door shut. Jeff Levy was pulled for the extra attacker with under two minutes remaining and the Jackalopes took advantage of the opportunity by adding an empty goal with 2.1 seconds. John Kozoriz added the empty-net power play tally to give the Jackalopes a 3-1 win.
Odessa has now won four consecutive home game and the win keeps the Bees from sweeping the season series. It is Odessa's eighth win of their last ten road games and it places them three points behind Lubbock for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. Rio Grande Valley will remain home at the Dodge Arena and will look to end their home winless streak Friday against the Austin Ice Bats.
