Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Second Annual Central Hockey League's "Best of the Best Poll" was announced recently and the Corpus Christi Rayz won ten awards in the league-wide survey poll. The Rayz were recognized for on and off the ice excellence in a number of categories. The top three vote getters in 39 different categories were released in the poll's results. Corpus Christi was named at the top of their list in four separate categories. The first overall recipients were Bernie John as the best Offensive Defenseman, Ryan Carter as the best Penalty Killer in the league, The Sting Team as the best Dance Team and the American Bank Center as having the best Arena Music. The CHL "Best of the Best Poll" takes votes from players, coaches and staff members of all 17 CHL teams.

John is the reigning CHL's Most Outstanding Defensemen and captain of the Rayz. He has 40 points in 47 games to lead all Southern Conference blueliners in scoring, despite missing eight games due to injury this season. Carter ranks second in the league with four shorthanded goals this season.

In addition to John and Carter, Rayz players were voted as award winners in three additional categories. Forward Greg Bullock, who leads the Southern Conference in assists with 49 and leads the Rayz in points with 66, was named the second best Playmaker in the CHL and third best Face-Off Man. Defenseman Dominic Periard was named the third best Bodychecker in the league. The 6'0", 230lbs. Quebec native gained world-wide notoriety earlier this year by knocking Ryan Power unconscious with a hip check in the Canadian reality TV show, "Making the Cut."

Off the ice, the Rayz took home additional honors as well. The Rayz were winners of the third Best Team Jersey in the league, and Corpus Christi was named the third Best City of the 17-team league. The Omni Bayfront Hotel which houses opposing teams was voted as the second best Host Hotel in the CHL.

"To be honored in such a wide variety of categories is a true testament to what we strive to accomplish as a franchise," Rayz General Manager Larry Linde said. "The players on our team and our off-ice staff are extremely deserving of these accolades. To be recognized by your peers is very rewarding. They understand the hard work that goes into building an organization. It reinforces that we're headed in the right direction."

In related news, the final nominations for the CHL Regular Season Awards were released Tuesday afternoon, and the Rayz gained two nominees. Bernie John was nominated for the Most Outstanding Defenseman Award which he won last year, and Derrick McIver was nominated for the CHL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award. McIver's 25 goals this season are tops for any first-year player in the Southern Conference and second in the league. Each category received six nominations from the CHL and the results will be released at the conclusion of the season.

The Corpus Christi Rayz return home on Friday night when they play their rivals, the Laredo Bucks for the final time this season on Ladies Night. All female fans 18 and older will receive discounted tickets starting at just $8. Regular priced tickets start for as little as $10 (plus a $1.50 facility fee) and are available at the American Bank Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations.
