Saints March Their Way to 15-1 Thumping of Canaries

ST. PAUL, MN- The Sioux Falls Canaries dropped the opening game of their eight-game roadtrip on Thursday night, falling to the St. Paul Saints by the final score of 15-1 at CHS Field.

Canaries starting pitcher Stephen Bougher had a rough day at the office, suffering his seventh loss of the season after giving up nine runs on 10 hits over four innings. The Saints knocked the right-hander out of the game in the after scoring five runs in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Nate Hanson capped off the five-run inning with a three-run home run over the right field wall. It was Hanson's sixth homer of the season and his third extra-base hit of the night against Bougher. Hanson finished the night going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a three-run home run, and five RBI for the Saints.

Relief pitcher Shawn Blackwell didn't fare much better, giving up six runs on five hits over two innings of work. Madison Boer and Josh Ferrell each worked a scoreless inning of relief, with Ferrell racking up three strikeouts in the 9th inning.

The Canaries only run of the night came in the top of the 7th inning when Blake Schmit led off the inning with a walk, and later scored on a J.C. Linares two-out RBI double. Schmit finished the night going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double of his own in the loss.

The four-game series continues on Friday night with Canaries RHP Ray Hanson (0-4, 8.48 ERA) battling Saints RHP Robert Coe (8-2, 4.88 ERA). Fans can listen to all of the action starting at 6:45 PM on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.

The Canaries return to the Birdcage on August 19th to battle the Lincoln Saldogs in the opening game of a three-game weekend series. It will be Girl Scouts night, and the final Friday Night Fireworks display of the 2016 season.
