Saints Bash Canaries Pitching in 9-5 Victory

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Mike Gilmartin hit two home runs all of last year in Lincoln. On Wednesday night he equaled that total. Tony Thomas finished a single shy of the cycle and plated four. In all the highest scoring team in the American Association, the St. Paul Saints, hammered Sioux Falls Canaries pitching as they took the rubber game of the three game series 9-5 at Sioux Falls Stadium

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first against Canaries starter Shawn Blackwell. Breland Almadova drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a single from Willie Argo. Angelo Songco was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thomas got his night started with a two-run double giving the Saints a 2-0 lead. Tony Caldwell followed with an RBI infield single to make it 3-0.

Saints starter Robert Coe was spectacular on the evening relying heavily on a devastating change up. The lone mistake he made came in the fifth when Blake Schmit hit a two-run home run, his second of the season. Outside of that Coe allowed just those two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six to pick up his second win of the season, just seven shy of surpassing the all-time Saints wins record.

The Saints scored in the final four innings of the game as Gilmartin hit his first of two home runs in the sixth, a solo shot to right for his second of the season, to make it 4-2.

With the Saints up 5-2 in the eighth Thomas led off the inning against reliever Kris Regas with a solo homer, his second of the season, to make it 6-2. Two batters later Gilmartin went deep again, a solo shot to left, his second of the night and third of the season, to make it 7-2. It was the fourth time in his career he's homered twice, last doing it August 4, 2014.

In the ninth Argo walked with one out and Angelo Songco and Thomas roped back-to-back triples to finish the scoring for the Saints.

The Saints return home on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. for game one of a four game series against the Kansas City T-Bones. The Saints send RHP Jeff Shields (1-0, 7.50) against T-Bones RHP Johny Shuttlesworth (0-1, 12.27). It is Military Appreciation Night presented by James Bellentine VFW Post 246. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, Cable Access Channels in the Twin Cities area and heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
