Wichita Wingnuts News Release

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Wichita Wingnuts held a 4-2 lead entering the sixth inning Wednesday night at Joe Becker Stadium, but saw the Joplin Blasters rally for four in the frame to regain a lead they did not relinquish in a 6-4 victory.

Taking over for departed starter Anthony Capra, Alex Boshers (0-1) was greeted by three straight hits from the Blasters (4-2) which brought the home team within one. After a run-producing bounce out by Zack Burling tied it, Mitch Glasser put Joplin up for good with an RBI double. Geraldo Valentin followed with a run scoring single to cap off the four-run frame.

Over the final four innings, the Wichita (1-5) offense went quiet, with just one runner reaching base after the fifth, and Joplin setting down 11 in a row at one point. The one base runner that the Wingnuts were able to muster came on a one-out single in the ninth from Richard Prigatano, which brought the tying run to the plate. However, Blasters closer Winston Abreu struck out the next two he faced to close it out and earn the save.

Wichita scored first for the first time this season, grabbing the lead in the third. Zack Cox hit a towering three-run shot for his first long ball as a Wingnut, putting the visitors up 3-0.

Joplin had an answer in the home half, scoring two, but could have had more if not for a sprawling catch in center by Harrison Kain to keep Wichita's lead in tact.

In the fifth, Josh Hodges (1-0) allowed his second homer of the night, as Brent Clevlen went deep for the second straight night, stretching the Wingnuts lead to 4-2.

The Wingnuts could not hold the lead for Capra however, who left with the lead for the second straight start but earned a no-decision. For the contest the lefty allowed two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out six.

The Wingnuts and Blasters wrap-up their three-game series Thursday night at Joe Becker Stadium. Wichita will turn to righty Tim Brown (0-0, 2.25), while Joplin will counter with fellow right-hander Carlos Fuentes (0-0, 2.25). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
