Wichita Wingnuts News Release

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Wichita Wingnuts surrendered franchise records in both runs (19) and hits (24), as the Joplin Blasters routed the visitors 19-10 Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game set at Joe Becker Stadium.

After Joplin (3-2) tallied a run in the first, Wichita (1-4) took a brief lead in the top of the second. With two outs, Matt Chavez kept the inning alive with a single, the first of his four hits in the contest. Richard Prigatano then followed with a homer for the second straight game, a two-run shot to put Wichita in front. The visitors then added one more in the inning, taking advantage of a Blasters error to make it 3-1.

Things went south in a hurry for the Wingnuts after that as Joplin sent 13 to the plate in an eight-run bottom of the second which chased starter Jon Link (0-2). The Blasters scored their eight runs on eight hits in the frame, and also got some help from three Wichita errors.

In the third, the Wingnuts once again posted a three-spot, and again the long ball played a part. Chavez launched a three-run homer off of Joplin starter Josh Evans, giving Chavez his first home run and RBIs in a Wichita uniform.

The Blasters onslaught continued in the middle innings, adding a run in the third and two more in the fourth on a Jake Taylor home run to make it 12-6, before Brent Dean picked up an RBI in the fifth to get one back for the 'Nuts.

Mitch Glasser singled in a pair in the sixth for Joplin, giving him three runs batted in on the night. The Blasters second baseman was one of three from the home team to drive in three, and every one of the Joplin starting nine drove in at least one run and collected at least two hits.

It was a 16-7 score entering the eighth, when Wichita showed signs of trying to claw back into contention. Brent Clevlen began the frame with a long solo shot to left, and the Wingnuts scored two more in the frame on a Joplin error with the bases loaded with two outs.

Joplin once again had an answer however, as they capped off their historic night with three more tallies in the eighth. The 19 runs and 24 hits allowed by the Wingnuts set franchise records for both categories, and also set franchise marks offensively for a single game for the Blasters.

The Wingnuts and Blasters continue their three-game series Wednesday night at Joe Becker Stadium. Southpaw Anthony Capra (0-0, 2.57) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Joplin will counter with right-hander Josh Hodges (0-0, 1.50). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
