WICHITA ROUTED IN JOPLIN

The Wichita Wingnuts set franchise records for both runs allowed (19) and hits allowed (24) as they were routed 19-10 by the Joplin Blasters in game one of a three-game series Tuesday night at Joe Becker Stadium. Leading 3-1 in the second, things went south quickly for Wichita as the Blasters sent 13 to the plate in an eight-run inning that saw the Wingnuts allow eight hits and also commit three errors. The 9-3 Joplin advantage was quickly sliced back to a three-run margin in the next half inning, as Wichita's Matt Chavez hit his first homer for the club, a three-run shot to make it 9-6. The Blasters continued to tack on in the middle innings however, and despite season-highs in runs (10) and hits (14) for the Wingnut offense, the visitors never seriously threatened the Joplin lead after their early edge was wiped away. All nine Blasters had at least two hits and one RBI in the contest, and eight of the nine scored at least twice. The Wingnuts had seven of their nine hitters pick up at least one hit and score once, led by Chavez who went 4-for-4 with his first 3 RBIs in a Wichita uniform and also scored three times.

POWER SURGE

After going without a home run for the first three games of the new season, the Wingnuts hit one on Sunday and three more in last night's loss to Joplin. Richard Prigatano launched the first homer of the evening, a two-run shot, giving him homers in consecutive games. Matt Chavez added his first long ball as a Wingnut as part of a 4-for-4 performance that saw him drive in three and score three times as well. Completing the trio of round trippers for Wichita last night was Brent Clevlen whose solo shot in the eighth was his first of the year.

CAPRA LOOKS TO TURN TIDE

With 28 runs and 35 hits allowed over their past two games, the Wingnuts will turn to veteran lefty Anthony Capra to try and stop the bleeding. The former Wichita State Shocker turned in the first quality start by a Wichita hurler in his 2016 debut last Friday, allowing just a pair of runs on six hits over his seven innings of work. Capra and Thursday's scheduled starter Tim Brown own the only two quality starts in the early going for a staff that is second-to-last in ERA at 7.36.
