American Association Game Recaps
May 25, 2016 - American Association (AA) News Release
Joplin 6, Wichita 4
The Joplin Blasters used a big sixth inning to move in front of the Wichita Wingnuts on their way to a 6-4 win at home.
The Wingnuts built an early lead behind a pair of home runs. The first was a three-run shot from 3B Zack Cox in the third inning and the second was a solo shot from DH Brent Clevlen in the fifth. But the Blasters plated a pair of runs of their own in the third on a sacrifice fly from LF Willie Cabrera and an RBI single from C Charlie Valerio. Joplin took control of the game in the pivotal sixth after the first three batters reached base safely and all three came around to score. With two outs, 2B Mitch Glasser doubled to score RF Jesus Solorzano and then scored on a single from DH Geraldo Valentine to close out the rally.
Starting pitcher Josh Hodges picked up the win for his six innings of work and reliever Willie Abreu earned his first save by striking out three batters in the ninth.
Lincoln 1, Kansas City 0
The Lincoln Saltdogs drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning and that proved to enough to claim a pitcher's duel with the Kansas City T-Bones 1-0.
1B Rene Leveret, who went 1-for-3 in the game, drew that crucial walk with two outs in the top of the sixth and it pushed 3B Christian Ibarra - who also walked - across the plate. The run ended T-Bones' starter Sean Furney's day after he had given up just two hits and four walks through 5.2 innings.
The Saltdogs' pitching staff combined to allow nine hits in the game but left eight baserunners stranded in the shutout. Starter Matt Larkins earned the win for tossing seven innings and giving up six hits while striking out four. Kansas City's SS Vladimir Frias was the only batter in the game to record more than one hit as he went 2-for-4.
Sioux City 4, Gary SouthShore 3
The Sioux City Explorers entered the bottom of the ninth inning with the Gary SouthShore RailCats tied at three but quickly loaded up the bases. RF Michael Lang, who reached on a lead-off walk, scored the game-winning run on a walk-off balk to give the Explorers a 4-3 win.
The RailCats struck first with a sac fly from SS Jarred Mederos in the top of the second but Explorers 1B Jarek Cunnigham pushed his team ahead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. The RailCats C Jose Gonzalez added another sac fly in the fourth but Cunningham added his third RBI in the fifth a bases-loaded single. Gary SouthShore's 3B Jose Sermo, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, tied the score with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Reliever Connor Overton picked up the win for working the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
St. Paul 9, Sioux Falls 5
The St. Paul Saints scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed from there on their way to a 9-5 win against the Sioux Falls Canaries.
The Canaries sent nine batters to the plate in the ninth inning and scored three runs to cut into the Saints' lead but left the bases loaded as Reliever Cody Wheeler struck out CF Ethan Chapman to end the game. St. Paul's 2B Tony Thomas led the way at the plate as he plated a pair of runs in the first inning with a double and then added a solo home run in the eighth. He finished 3-for-5 with four RBI.
C Mike Gilmartin also had a strong day for the Saints as he left the yard twice, both solo shots. DH Willie Argo added a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and two runs scored. For the Canaries, RF Ozney Guillen went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and 3B Blake Schmit went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
