Saginaw Spirit News Release
On Friday night the Spirit took the road to Kitchener to play the Rangers at The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. The last time Saginaw took the ice in Kitchener they handed the Rangers a 6-3 loss, and the Spirit now need only three points to clinch the final playoff position.
In the opening period Saginaw would be the first and only squad to find the back of the net. Jimmy Lodge recorded his 27th goal this season with a perfect put back one timer goal. His rebounded goal had an assist from Garret Ross, giving Saginaw the 1-0 lead. Time and time again Spirit goaltender and Detroit Red Wings draft pick Jake Paterson has served opposing teams with shutout periods, Friday night being a prime example. Paterson deflected every Kitchener shot on goal and held the Spirit lead to 1-0.
The second period scoring was opened this time by Kitchener when Frank Corrado took an open opportunity that paid off for the Rangers. His tying goal was assisted by Ben Fanelli. Shortly after, Ranger goaltender John Gibson endured an unexpected shot from Terry Trafford who would convert his tenth goal this season. His unassisted goal gave the Spirit the lead 2-1. While shorthanded, Spirit Assistant Captain Steven Strong found space in front of the net and took advantage to give Saginaw the insurance 3-1 goal. Twenty-seven seconds after Strong buried his goal, the Rangers fired back with a goal of their own on the power play off the stick of Ryan Murphy. Murphy's goal had assists from Matt Puempel and Tobias Rieder.
Midway through the third period, a quick wrist shot from Ranger forward Matt Puempel tied the score at three. The tying goal was assisted by Ryan Murphy and Josh Leivo. When regulation play and over time play wasn't enough to put either team ahead, a shoot out determined the final score. Gregg Sutch and Garret Ross buried the first two goals in the shoot out for Saginaw and Spirit goalie Jake Paterson stopped two out of three shots to hold on for the Spirit 4-3 victory in Kitchener.
