Kitchener Rangers News Release

Ryan Murphy and Matt Puempel each recorded a goal and an assist, but the Kitchener Rangers fell 4-3 to the Saginaw Spirit in a shootout Friday night. Frank Corrado also scored for the Rangers in the loss.

The Spirit opened the scoring just past the four minute mark when Jimmy Lodge jumped on a rebound in front of the Rangers net and skipped a quick one-timer past starter John Gibson. Captain Garret Ross collected the lone assist on Lodge's 27th of the season.

Kitchener led shots on goal 13-10 after the first period of play.

The Rangers evened the score at 1-1 near the midway point of the middle frame. Defenceman Frank Corrado's shot bounced off the glove hand of Saginaw netminder Jake Paterson and into the back of the net. Ben Fanelli collected the assist on the Vancouver Canucks prospect's seventh goal of the season.

Terry Trafford put the Spirit back in front at the 14:53 mark, pushing the puck ahead on an odd-man rush and beating Gibson for his 10th of the year.

Saginaw jumped to a two-goal lead late in the period when Steven Strong broke out short-handed and snapped a shot under Gibson. The unassisted tally was the veteran defenceman's fourth of the season.

Kitchener responded quickly, adding a power play marker just 29 second later to make it 3-2. Captain Ryan Murphy's point shot soared by Paterson, giving the veteran defenceman 10 goals this season. Assists were credited to Matt Puempel and Tobias Rieder.

The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal in the second by a 17-9 margin.

Puempel's team leading 31s t goal of the season pulled Kitchener even with 8:26 remaining on the clock. Murphy connected a pass to the Ottawa Senators prospect and he launched a shot that ricocheted off a goal post and into the net behind Paterson. Joshua Leivo also assisted on the play.

Neither team could break the deadlock, sending the contest into overtime. Kitchener out-shot Saginaw 12-9 in the final frame and 42-28 in regulation.

The extra frame was scoreless meaning a shootout was needed to determine a winner. The Spirit fired two shots in the overtime, while the Rangers fired one shot at Paterson.

Gregg Sutch and Ross scored in the shootout, lifting Saginaw to a 4-3 victory. The Spirit have won all three meetings with the Rangers this season.
