Saginaw Battles CHL Tops Knights, Fall 3-1 on Empty Net Goal

(London, ON) -- The Saginaw Spirit played the the CHL top rated London Knights even for much of Friday night's contest, but fell to a power play goal and empty net goal in a 3-1 loss.

London opened scoring late in the first period when forward Robbie Drummond scored at close range, on a delayed Saginaw penalty.

Saginaw answered in the second, when strong individual effort from Peter Franchin pushed the puck deep into London's zone. Winger Marek Kvapil scooped the puck from behind the net, and found Jean-Michel Rizk open in front. Rizk went to his backhand, and beat Knights' goalie Ryan McDonald top-shelf for the game-tying goal.

The Score remained tied into the third period, when Saginaw fought off a 5-3 London power play, but couldn't kill the second penalty. Dyllan Hunter scored on a quick pass from point blank range to make the score 2-1.

The final goal came on an empty net with just five seconds left, when the league's leading score, Anaheim Mighty Ducks draft pick Corey Perry put the game away.

Spirit goaltender Mike Brown was named the game's first star, turned back 37 shots in the effort. The loss takes Saginaw's record to 3-8-1-2. Saginaw returns to the Dow Event Center on Saturday at 7:00 PM to face the Ottawa 67's, and Sunday at 2:00 PM against the Windsor Spitfires. Sunday's game is the first Family Fun Day, with special ticket prices courtesy SMG, Pepsi, The Saginaw News and Express Stop Food Stores.
