Sacramento Gets ahead Early, Holds off Chihuahuas

The Sacramento River Cats defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas 7-3 Thursday night at Southwest University Park. The teams have split the first two games of the series.

El Paso was held to one hit through eight innings before rallying to score three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Brett Nicholas and Shane Peterson both had two-out, two-strike RBI hits in the bottom of the ninth. Sacramento starter Conner Menez pitched seven shutout innings for the River Cats.

T.J. Weir threw a scoreless relief outing for the second time in as many nights. Trey Wingenter allowed two runs for El Paso, ending a streak of nine consecutive scoreless appearances. El Paso has held rehabbing San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence 1-for-9 in the first two games of the series.

The Chihuahuas went 11-19 in May.
