Sabercats' Jones Named Defensive Player Of The Week

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 1, 2007) - San Jose SaberCats defensive lineman Ron Jones has been selected the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his performance on Saturday, Apr. 28, against the Utah Blaze, the Arena Football League announced today.
Jones (6-3, 283), playing for the first time since being shelved with a hamstring injury late in the first half at New Orleans on Apr 13, set team game records with 3.0 quarterback sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss, while matching the team mark with a pair of forced fumbles. He also added a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
The former Southern Mississippi standout led a defense that forced five Utah turnovers and held the league's highest scoring offense to its lowest point total of the year in a 69-48 win and broke the team single-game records that have stood since 2000.
"The coaches came up to me last week and asked me if I would be ready to go, and I told them I would be," stated Jones. "I had to prepare and do what I needed to do to get back healthy and be ready for the game against Utah."
It's the first league award for Jones in his brief AFL career and the first for a SaberCat this season.
"I can't take all of the credit," Jones said. "I give it to God first of all and then my teammates because they battled and fought just as hard as I did to get us a win."
The first-place SaberCats travel to Arizona for a contest with the Rattlers on Saturday, May 5 and return to HP Pavilion on Saturday May 12 to host the Las Vegas Gladiators.
