THE GAME:
The Colorado Crush travel to Chicago for the second of a three game road swing to face the defending ArenaBowl champion Rush on Monday, May 7th at 6:00 p.m. With the win over Kansas City last Friday, Colorado moved their overall record to 6-3 for the third time in the last four seasons.
Chicago currently leads the Central Division by a game and a half over Colorado, so this version of one of the AFL's best rivalries and the league's last two ArenaBowl champions has a lot at stake. These teams will also meet again in Week 16 in Denver on Monday, June 18th. Last season, Colorado sweep the regular season series for the first time in club history and captured their first-ever victory in Chicago on March 10th.
While the Rush enter the contest as the AFL's hottest team, the Crush are riding a three-game winning steak of their own. Last season, Colorado put together three separate 3-game win streaks, but could never get that fourth win.
Colorado recent success can be attributed to their stellar defensive play. In their last three games, the Crush defense has hauled in eight interceptions resulting in a +7 turnover margin in those contests.
The Chicago Rush carry a league-best and team-record seven game win streak into Monday night's game. The Rush have also strung together seven consecutive wins at Allstate Arena.
Chicago's incredible play through eight games can be linked to one of the league's best defenses. The Rush defensive unit ranks second scoring defense (46 points per game), third in total defense (279 yards per game) and first in turnover margin (+16). Offensively, WR Bobby Sippio is putting together one of the best seasons in league history. This season, Sippio has amassed 35 touchdowns (1st) on 79 receptions (4th) for 1,188 yards (2nd), while also leading the AFL in scoring.

HEAD COACHES:
MIKE DAILIEY, Colorado (105-67, 11th Year): Mike Dailey enters his fourth season in Colorado and 11th as head coach in the AFL, after becoming the Crush's second head coach on June 26, 2003. Dailey joined the Crush following 13 seasons in the Albany/Indiana Firebirds organization, including the final seven as head coach.
One of the most successful and well-respected coaches in AFL history, Dailey's teams have compiled an overall record of 105-67 record, a winning percentage of 61.0. His teams have also made eight postseason appearances and he has won five division titles and two championships. Following the Crush's 44-40 victory over Kansas City on March 10, 2007, Dailey became only the fourth head coach in AFL history to surpass the 100 win mark. He currently stands as the league fourth all-time winningest coach.
In his first season in Colorado, Dailey helped guide the Crush to the largest turnaround in AFL history, inheriting a 2-14 team and leading them to an 11-5 record in 2004. In 1999, Dailey led the Albany Firebirds to their only ArenaBowl championship and was named AFL Coach of the Year. Before being named head coach of the Firebirds in 1997, Dailey served as an assistant in Albany for five seasons.
Dailey began his AFL coaching career with the Washington Commandos where he served as offensive/defensive line coach in 1990. He joined the Firebirds organization in the same capacity in 1991.
Prior to the AFL, Dailey worked as an assistant coach at Towson State University and was the offensive coordinator at Montgomery College-Rockville (Md.). Dailey got his start in coaching in 1981 as a 22-year-old assistant at Georgetown Prep High School in Rockville, Md. The move to coaching followed a semi-pro football career in the Washington D.C. area.

MIKE HOHENSEE, Chicago (113-95, 14th Year): With Chicago's 51-48 win in Colorado February 13th, Rush head coach Mike Hohensee moved into sole possession of third place on the AFL's all-time wins list. Hohensee, in his 14th season as a head coach in the AFL, was hired as the first coach in Rush history on September 26, 2000. He has a regular season record of 112-95. He has a career 11-9 mark in the postseason. He has led the Rush to six-consecutive playoff berths and two Central Division titles (2002 and 2004) and the ArenaBowl XX title.
Hohensee joined the Rush after spending the previous two seasons as head coach and director of player personnel for the New England Sea Wolves. He has spent a total of 12 seasons coaching in the Arena Football League, including prior head coaching stints with the Washington Commandos (1990), the Albany Firebirds (1994-96), the Anaheim Piranhas (1997) and the New England Sea Wolves (1999-2000).
He began his coaching career as an assistant for the Chicago Bruisers in 1989 before becoming the youngest head coach in league history for the Washington Commandos in 1990.
Hohensee played professional football for the Washington Federals of the USFL, the CFL's Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts and the Pittsburgh Gladiators of the AFL- where he is credited with throwing the first touchdown pass in AFL history. He also saw action with the Chicago Bears during the 1987 season.
Hohensee was an all-America quarterback at San Antonio Junior College before transferring to the University of Minnesota.
LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET:
DENVER (5/28/06) - Four turnovers -- including an interception returned 45 yards for a touchdown -- proved fatal for the Colorado Crush as its bid to become the Arena Football League's first back-to-back champions since the 1995-96 Tampa Bay Storm ended in a 63-46 loss to the Chicago Rush at Pepsi Center on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the Crush's first-ever home postseason defeat, and ends its season at 11-6. Chicago, which closed the regular season with a modest 7-9 record, moves on to the American Conference championship game at San Jose next Saturday following its second consecutive road playoff win.
Chicago led the game start to finish, consuming exactly half of the first quarter on its game-opening touchdown drive and then pushing the edge to 13 points after Dennison Robinson returned an interception 45 yards for a score with 4:12 left in the first quarter. However, the Crush scratched back to within two points before the game turned against the defending champions for good, when Chicago scored 17 points in the last 3:28 of the first half to turn a two-point lead into a 33-14 halftime advantage.
Colorado had possession at its 5-yard-line after Rashad Floyd made an end-zone interception on a pass tipped by Delvin Hughley to snuff out a Chicago drive. However, Dutton fumbled a snap two plays later, giving the ball back to Chicago and setting up a DeJuan Alfonzo touchdown that put the Rush up 23-14.
The ensuing kickoff bounced off the iron at the bottom of the right rebound net and beyond the grasp of Willis Marshall, allowing Jeremy Unertl to recover the football at the goal line to increase Chicago's lead to 16 points. Chicago stopped the Crush at the 1-yard-line on the game's next drive, and Dan Frantz kicked a 26-yard field goal as time expired.
Colorado would narrow the deficit to single digits twice in the secnd half, pulling within 36-27 in the third quarter and 49-40 in the fourth. However, miscures continued to hinder the Crush, as two missed extra points and another fumbled center-snap exchange was returned 20 yards for a third-quarter touchdown by Chicago's DeJuan Alfonzo.
Crush offensive specialist Damian Harrell had 10 catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver/linebacker Andy McCullough snagged seven passes for 106 yards and two scores.
CRUSH LAST WEEK:
KANSAS CITY (4/27/07) - The Colorado Crush won their third straight game with a 45-42 road victory over the Kansas City Brigade Friday night. With the win, Colorado moves their overall record to 6-3 for the third time in the last four seasons and takes the season series from the Brigade.
Crush QB John Dutton threw five touchdowns on 25-of-46 passes for 270 yards to pace Colorado, while WR Brad Pyatt hauled in a career-high nine receptions for a game-high 120 yards and a score. Crush WR Damian Harrell also added three first half touchdowns, but played sparingly in the second half due to a toe sprain. For Kansas City, FB Dawan Moss rushed for three touchdowns on nine carries for 20 yards.
The first half was characterized with both teams trading scores and stops. Colorado was able to take a three-point 24-21 lead into the break following a 32-yard Jason Ball field goal.
Kansas City took their first lead of the game early in the third quarter when Moss broke in for a five-yard rushing score to put the Brigade up 28-24. The Crush responded scoring the contest's next 14 points on touchdowns by WR Alonzo Nix and DB Jason Harmon to build their biggest advantage of the game 38-28. Colorado's scores were set-up by the defense holding Kansas City on a four-and-out inside the five-yard line and an interception by LB Anthony Dunn.
Brigade WR Boo Williams would contribute with two four quarter touchdowns, the final one coming with 17 seconds left in the game, but it would prove to not be enough as the Crush hung on for the three-point win and control of second place in the Central Division.
THINGS TO WATCH:
YOUNG BLOOD:
The Colorado Crush took the field in Week 1 with four rookies on their active roster. Not since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival to Colorado in 2004 has he had that many first-year players on his Crush active roster to begin a season.
The Crush currently have five rookies on their active roster with four of those players starting.
LOCAL TIES:
This season the Crush have found a lot of good-young talent right in their back yard. Here is a list of players that have Colorado ties:
- DL QUINN DORSEY attended Manual High School in Denver.
- FB/LB ANTHONY DUNN attended Centauri High School in Manassa, CO and later played at the University of Northern Colorado.
- OL BRETT HUYSER played his collegiate football at the Air Force Academy.
- WR BRAD PYATT has played football at all three levels of his career in Colorado (Arvada West High School, Northern Colorado and the Crush).
BUILDING A WINNING TRADITION:
The Crush are the winningest team in the AFL regular season since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival, having tied for the league's best record in 2004 (11-5) and finishing with the American Conference's top seed in 2005 (10-6) and 2006 (11-5).

LET'S MAKE IT THREE:
Last season, Colorado was the only team to repeat as a division champion. This year, they'll look to become the first team since the New York Dragons (2003-2005) to repeat as divisional champions in three consecutive seasons.

A true AFL Ironman, Kyle Moore-Brown is in his 13th season in the league and has never missed a game. ArenaBowl XIX marked his AFL record 176th consecutive start. The first 139 all came with the Firebirds organization before he signed with the Crush prior to the 2004 season. Kyle's career milestone of 200 came against the New York Dragons on April 15, 2007.
