Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Central Hockey League today announced that Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs forward David Rutherford has been named this week ‚¬â„¢s Oakley/CHL Player of the Week. Rutherford ‚¬â„¢s first career Player of the Week award comes after he totaled seven points in three games to extend his team lead in scoring.

During a busy four-game week in which Bossier-Shreveport went 4-0, Rutherford scored two goals, added five assists and posted a +5 rating in three games before leaving in the first period of Sunday ‚¬â„¢s game in Texas with an injury. The 2011 CHL All-Star is tied for fifth in the league with 35 goals this season and has added 31 assists to lead the club with 66 points.

Rutherford started the week with an assist in Tuesday ‚¬â„¢s 5-4 win over Dayton and then earned first-star accolades with a four-point night (one goal and three assists) as the Mudbugs crushed the Gems 7-2 on Friday.

As the ‚¬ËœBugs opened a two-game set with Texas on Saturday, Rutherford assisted on the eventual game-winning goal early in the second period and then scored a dazzling penalty shot goal in the third to salt away a 5-1 victory. On the penalty shot, Rutherford placed the heel on his stick on top of the puck and worked it to the front of the net before backhanding a perfect shot over Scott Reid ‚¬â„¢s blocker for the goal.

He then played only a few shifts in the first period of Sunday ‚¬â„¢s 1-0 win over the Brahmas before being injured. He did not return to the game, leaving his status in question for this week ‚¬â„¢s road games at Fort Wayne and Bloomington.

The ‚¬ËœBugs will be back in action Wednesday night in Fort Wayne, Indiana as they open a two-game set with the Komets. Opening faceoff is set for 6:30 pm Central time with radio coverage starting at 6:15 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. The game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
