WEEKLY NOTES
'Bugs Take it to Texas, Win Streak at Five
The Mudbugs have completed their 11-game season series against Texas with three straight wins over the rival Brahmas in the past eight days. The 'Bugs have outscored the Brahmas 12-1 in that span and handed them their only two shutout losses of the season on consecutive Sundays to win the season series with a record of 6-4-1 against Texas. Sprinkled between those three wins have been two more triumphs over Dayton to bring the 'Bugs winning streak to five straight games; a stretch during which Bossier-Shreveport has outscored its opponents 24-7.
The Races are on: Mudbugs Back in Second
With just less than two weeks and around half-a-dozen games left in the 2010-11 regular season, playoff races are heating up all over the CHL. The Mudbugs' winning streak has propelled them back into second place in the Berry Conference with a two-point edge over the Brahmas, who do have two games in hand. Tulsa is also in the hunt for second place in the conference with only a two-point deficit to Texas entering this week.
Look Out, Smokin' Joe
Forward Travis Clayton had two more points Saturday to move within six points of the CHL's all-time scoring record, which is currently held by longtime Oklahoma City Blazer Joe Burton. With ten points (5g, 5a) in his last five games, Clayton (979 points) is making a legitimate case to challenge Burton's 985 CHL points in the final five games of the season. Against Dayton on Tuesday, the 14-year-veteran scored his first Mudbugs hat trick to lift the 'Bugs to a 5-4 win on the night before his 35th birthday. He then has added four more points (1g, 3a) on Friday and Saturday to extend the hot streak.
Shawn Goes Streaking
Forward Shawn Limpright enters this week having matched the Mudbugs' longest point streak of the season at nine games. Limpright scored the game's only goal Sunday to extend the streak as the 'Bugs topped the Brahmas 1-0. He had two primary assists the night before against Texas and scored a goal Friday against Dayton to reach 100 points as a Mudbug. With five goals and eight assists during the streak, #26 has increased his point total to 50 pts in 52 games this year. Limpright led the team in scoring last season with 53 points (18g, 35a).
The Captain Keeps Climbing
With a goal and an assist Friday, sixth-year Mudbugs forward Brett Smith became the fifth player in franchise history to top 300 points in purple and teal. Last week Smith passed General Manager Jason Campbell for fifth on the team's all-time scoring list and enters tonight with 301 points in his Mudbugs career. He also ranks fifth in career assists and seventh in goals. Smith is near a point-per-game this year with 50 points (19g, 31a) in 53 games.
Getting Young on Defense
The 'Bugs have bolstered their D-corps with the addition of defenseman Kevin Young, 28, who paid immediate dividends with three assists and a +4 rating in his first two games with the club. Young has just returned from playing in the Netherlands, where he racked up 65 points (17g, 48a) in just 40 games this season. After a solid Major Junior career and two seasons and the U. of New Brunswick, the 6-2, 196-pound Young has spent his entire pro career in Europe.
