Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA- After dropping the first game of the series to the San Jose Giants (72-35, 21-16), the Inland Empire 66ers (50-56, 18-18) lost a heartbreaker in 10 innings by a final score of 2-1.

Max Russell, making his Cal League debut was firing on all cylinders for the 66ers Monday night as it was a pitcher's duel at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Russell went seven innings giving up no runs and only three hits. For the Giants, Craig Westcott pitched well opposite Russell going five innings scattering three hits while also not surrendering any runs.

If not for some good defense from the Giants in the sixth inning, the 66ers would have taken the lead undoubtedly. With runners on second and third, Eric Oliver grounded the ball sharply over to the Giant second baseman, Ryan Cavan, who threw home and caught Dwayne Bailey who was trying to score. Oliver then tried to stretch the play and go to second base, but he was thrown out and the inning was over as the great opportunity was squandered.

Lightning struck again in the eighth inning as the 66ers got the bases loaded, but were unable to bring any of the three runners home. Dillon Baird was robbed of a base hit by Cavan who made a diving catch in the infield and the runners had to hold. Subsequently, Inland Empire catcher, Jose Jimenez went down swinging.

The deadlock was broken in the top of the ninth inning when Giant right fielder, Jarrett Parker, smacked an RBI single into left field which brought in the defensive star of the game for San Jose, Ryan Cavan.

Inland Empire wouldn't go down without a fight however as 66ers left fielder, David Harris led off the bottom half of the 9th with a walk. After an Irvine strikeout, Jon Karcich laced an RBI double into deep center field scoring Harris on the play sending the game to extras.

In the top of the 10th, the always dangerous Gary Brown struck for the Giants as he banged an RBI single through the left side scoring Alex Burg. That run would be all they would need as the 66ers were unable to score in the bottom half of the inning.

Matt Oye (5-3, 5.40 ERA) heads to the hill for Inland Empire tomorrow opposite a San Jose pitcher to be named. First pitch is scheduled for 11am.
