Bakersfield Blaze News Release

It wasn't the prettiest game of the season, but whatever it was, it worked, as the Blaze snapped a 4-game losing skid with a 4-3 win over the Jethawks on Monday night.

A monster crowd turned out for the smash sensation Dollar Monday promotion, and they saw a goofy ballgame!

The Blaze struck first in this one, with Dayne Read clubbing his 4th homer of the year, a solo shot to left, leading off the bottom of the first. But a half inning later, the Jethawks got the run right back. A hit, an errant pickoff throw, and a 2-out grounder into rightfield tied the game at one.

The Jethawks then surged ahead, scoring twice in the 3rd on a double, a single, 2 wild pitches and another error, and the Blaze had to play comeback.

Thanks to a Jethawks miscue, Bakersfield got a run in the 3rd to cut their deficit to just a run, and finally pushed ahead for good in the 5th. With one out, A.J. Means reached base on a broken bat, infield single off Lancaster starter Jose Cisnero (L, 7-9), and 1 out later, Ryan La Marre drew a walk. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position, and Brodie Greene bashed a topspin liner into left to plate 2.

J.C. Sulbaran (W, 8-2) went 7 strong innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 10, and the combination of Derrik Lutz and Chris Manno (S, 1) finished the game, though not without a little anxiety. With 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 8th, Manno bounced a changeup, but it never left the area around home plate. The Jethawks runner at 2nd mistakenly took off for 3rd, and thanks to that baserunning mishap, the Blaze were able to hang on.

The home series concludes tomorrow at 7:45pm, as well as the season series with Lancaster.
