Indiana Mad Ants News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN., February 3, 2008 - The Fort Wayne Mad Ants' Walker Russell Jr. and Chris Hunter have been selected to play in the 2009 NBA D-League All-Star game which will be played on February 14 at the NBA All-Star Jam Sessions presented by adidas. The game will tip off at 2 p.m. MT on Jam Session's Center Court and will be shown live on NBA TV.
Russell Jr. and Hunter will be teammates on the blue team which will be coached by Austin Toros' head coach Quin Snyder.
The 6'0" point guard, Russell Jr., currently leads the D-League in assists per game, averaging 11.8 per game, including a D-League season high 20 assists against Iowa on 12/05/09. He is also averaging 17.5 points per game and has recorded a double-double in 15 games so far this season.
Hunter, a 6'11" center out of the University of Michigan, is averaging 17.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He has recorded 12 double-doubles on the season including a 23-point, 18-rebound performance against the Iowa Energy on 01/19, where he made the game winning layup at the buzzer to give the Ants the 2 point victory.
"These two players are extremely deserving of this honor," said Mad Ants President Jeff Potter. "Walker has been on an absolute tear in terms of his playmaking and has nearly four assists more per game than the next closest player. That is really quite a stat and demonstrates just how fantastic he has been in terms of distributing the ball."
"Chris has been a revelation for us, as well," continued Potter. "He is near the top of the league in terms of double-doubles, and I have been very impressed with his skill level. His footwork, his shooting, and his work ethic have put him a position to where he is a potential NBA call-up."
Russell and Hunter will follow in Jeremy Richardson's footsteps as Mad Ants players who have been selected to the All-Star team. Richardson, currently playing for the Orlando Majic, was named 2008 D-League All-Star MVP.
