Rapid City Rush News Release
On Friday night, the Rapid City Rush collected the first win in franchise history with an 8-2 victory over the Corpus Christi IceRays. Leading the way for Rapid City was Chris Lipsett who made his way into the record books again by picking up the first hat-trick in franchise history.
For the third straight game, the Rush tallied the first goal of the contest and on Friday night, the opening marker was scored by veteran Garret Prosofsky at the 6:47 mark of the first. Prosofsky's power-play goal was scored off of a rebound and the assists were credited to Luke Fritshaw and Blair Manning. Unlike the first two games however, the Rush did not widen the margin. Instead, the home team was able to even the score at one apiece when IceRays captain Justin Quenneville scored a power play marker of his own less than five minutes later. The Rush were determined to head to the first intermission on top and they were able to do so with the help of Chris Di Ubaldo who gave the Rush the lead for the second time. With less than two minutes left, tape-to-tape passing set up another power-play goal as Di Ubaldo was fed in the slot area with a pass from Rich Hansen with Gio Flamminio picking up the second Helper. The first period ended with the Rush leading 16-2 in shots, the widest margin of the game.
In the second period, the Rush came shooting out of the gate, and looked to put the game away. Just eleven seconds in to the middle frame, Les Reaney scored an even-strength goal as Fritshaw and Hansen both picked up their second assists of the game. One minute and twenty-four seconds later, Chris Lipsett picked up his third goal of the year and made it a 4-1 game as Reaney and Hansen assisted on the power-play goal. Lipsett added his second of the game at the 4:17 mark of the second as Reaney assisted on the play as did Jamie VanderVeeken who picked up his first point of the season. After that goal, Corpus Christi head coach Sylvain Cloutier decided to pull starting goaltender Kris Tebbs and in came Dustin Traylen. With just over five minutes left in the second, the IceRays were able to make it a 5-2 contest when Ryan Bennett scored an even strength goal from Mike Zbriger and John McNabb.
The final stanza was all Rapid City as Lipsett opened the scoring with his third of the game, the first hat-trick in Rush history. Lipsett also tallied the first goal in franchise history in game one against Colorado. Prosofsky and Hansen picked up the assists on the sixth Rush goal, a powerplay marker. Then another first was realized for the Rush as Kyle Sheen scored on the first regulation-time penalty shot in Rush history. After the successful attempt, IceRays goaltender Dustin Traylen was ejected from the game for an abuse of officials game misconduct, the third IceRays player to be thrown from the game. Less than a minute before the penalty shot, IceRays captain Justin Quenneville was ejected from the game as was John McNabb earlier in the period, both for the same offense. After the penalties were sorted out, the Rush added the final goal of the contest on Tebbs, who was back in after the Traylen ejection. Les Reaney picked up his second goal and fourth point of the game as R.G. Flath and Luke Fritshaw earned the helpers on the play.
On the night, Rapid City dominated the shot department 41-18. Rush goaltender Miguel Beaudry made 16 saves en route to his first win of the season. Leading the way for the Rush on the scoreboard were Rich Hansen and Les Reaney who both had four-point nights, also Chris Lipsett and Luke Fritshaw who had three-point efforts. Head Coach Joe Ferras also earned his first victory behind the bench for Rapid City.
The Rush have two more games on the weekend with Saturday night's contest against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and a Sunday face-off against the Laredo Bucks.
