
Jacks Start Slow, Lose 7-3

(North Richland Hills, TX) - After an offensive outburst in their previous game the Jacks entered the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills, TX on Saturday night to face the Texas Brahmas looking to keep things rolling. A slow start by Odessa paired with Scott Sheppard's five point night for Texas spelled disaster as the Jacks lost 7-3.
It was a scoreless first period between both teams, but Texas controlled most of the play with four man-advantage opportunities. Odessa was outshot 11-5 in the first period.
The offense came alive in the second period as six goals were scored between both teams. Texas got on the board first :28 in as Justin Kinnunen scored on assists from Grant Jacobsen and Scott Sheppard. The Brahmas made it a 2-0 lead with a power play goal by Sheppard. Jacobsen and Tyler Skworchinski added the assists. Odessa would get on the board with a power play goal by Sebastien Thinel to make it a 2-1 deficit for Odessa. The goal came at 8:33 with assists by Jeff Pierce and Dominic Leveille. It was Thinel's third of the season. Texas would come back with two more goals of their own. At 15:06 Skworchinski made it 3-1 Texas lead. Jacobsen and Sheppard had the helpers on Skworchinski's power play goal. Next Marc Belanger deflected a Craig Minard shot from the point to score on the power play. Kinnunen along with Minard had as assist on the goal. Kory Karlander cut the Brahma lead in half with three seconds remaining in the period, scoring his second goal of the season. Jeff Pierce and Dave Van Drunen added the assists on the goal. At the end of two periods, Odessa trailed 4-2.
The third period belonged to the Brahmas who scored three goals starting with Sheppard's second of the game, unassisted at 4:09. Matt Quinn scored next for Texas on assists from Pete Rouleau and Marc Belanger at 12:37. Leveille would add one more for Odessa on assists from Sebastien Thinel and Russ Moyer at 17:38. It was Leveille's third of the year. Texas led 6-3. Jacobsen scored a shorthanded goal at 16:54 on an assist from Sheppard. The final score was 7-2, Brahmas.
The Jacks return home tonight, but head back on the road Tuesday to face the Amarillo Gorillas. The puck will drop at 11:00 AM.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team will play it's home opener on Halloween night against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 7:0 5PM.
