Laredo Bucks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Ice Rays 3-1 Saturday night, in front of 2,723 fans at the American Bank Center. With the win the Bucks snap their two-game losing steak and even their record at 2-2. Laredo was outshot 33-15 on the night, but Sebastien Centomo came up big in net, setting aside 32 of the 33 Ice Rays shots he faced.
With the game tied at 1-1 entering the third period Alex Goupil took over, scoring both Laredo goals to lead them to victory.
The Bucks took a 2-1 lead just 2:11 into the third period as rookie Joey Moggach found an open Goupil past the Corpus defense. Goupil took the pass and had a breakaway on Dustin Traylen and snapped the shot past his former roomate.
Laredo, and Goupil put the game away with 5:51 remaining in the game, when Goupil broke free again past the Ice Rays defense as he took a pass from rookie Jason Dixon, and lunged ahead and snuck the puck Traylen's pad.
Goupil now has three goals on the season.
Laredo scored first for the fourth straight game, as the two-time CHL MVP Jeff Bes knocked in his first goal of the season.
Bes took a pass from Serge Dube and skated across the blue line, then sent a shot from the bottom of the right circle past his former teammate Dustin Traylen. Dube and Matt Summers each picked up their second assist of the campaign on Bes' tally.
Laredo found themselves in penalty trouble in the opening period, as they had to kill off three Ice Rays (1-2) power-plays, including one five-on-three. As a result of the penalties the Bucks were outshot 12-2 in the period, with Sebastien Centomo stopping all 12 shots that came his way, and Traylen setting aside just one of two Laredo attempts.
The second period got off to an aggressive start when Chris Shaffer hit Laredo's Devin Featherstone hard into the glass, forcing it to get knocked out and caused about a 15 minute delay.
The Bucks were once again tested on the penalty kill with eight minutes left, as they killed off a five-on-three that lasted 1:36.
Taking penalties would come back to haunt Laredo late in the middle period.
With one minute to play in the second period the Ice Rays drew even on the power-play, as John McNabb sent a slap from the left point that was deflected in by Ryan Bennett past Centomo. The tally was Bennett's third on the year.
Centomo stopped the first 20 shots he faced before the Bennett tally.
Laredo was once again outshot in the period, this time by a count of 9-6.
Traylen took the loss as he stopped 12 of 15 Laredo shots in Net.
