Rapid City Rush News Release
(Southaven, MS) - On Tuesday morning, the Rush took part in the seventh annual "Face off Field Trip" at the DeSoto Civic Center. The Rush battled back twice in regulation, but were shutout in the shootout as the RiverKings came away with a 3-2 victory. Rapid City killed off all eleven of the 'Kings powerplay chances, returning the penalty kill unit to 2nd in the league.
The Rush didn't get the start they wanted as the RiverKings began the scoring just 1:56 into the contest. A loose puck in neutral ice was collected by Ryan Held, dropped to Louis Dumont and sent over to Darrell Stoddard who finished the play with a shot to the top-left corner. After twenty minutes, Rapid City was down 1-0, but held the 'Kings scoreless on four powerplay chances.
In the second, with the special teams again on display, Rapid City would finally get on the board at the 12:47 mark. After Rich Hansen was tripped entering the offensive zone, Colt King walked in on netminder Mark Sibbald and buried a puck blocker-side to tie the contest.
To start the third, the RiverKings would score the quickest goal of the season against the Rush, just 11 seconds into the period. Off of the faceoff, Adam Smyth took a shot that was stopped by Beaudry, but the rebound found Matt Pierce who gave Mississippi a 2-1 lead. It would take until the 13:23 mark, but Jon Pelle would tie up the contest for the second time. After a cycle with Derek LeBlanc, Pelle battled his way to the front of the net where his patience paid off as he forced Sibbald to commit and the Harvard grad lifted the puck over and in.
With neither side finding the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation or in overtime, the game was headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, both goalies exchanged spectacular saves through the first five rounds. In the sixth round, a Scott Wray miss in the top half set up Matt Pierce's goal to complete the 3-2 shootout win.
The Rush are now 1-2 in games decided by a shootout. Rapid City only went 1-for-8 on the powerplay, but went a perfect 11-for-11 on the penalty kill. With the game going into extra time, the Rush pick up one point in the standings for sole possession of first place once again.
The Rush now have a day off before playing the RiverKings again on Thursday at 6:05pm MST. Tune into the broadcast on 100.3 the FOX or streaming online at www.foxradio.com.
