Runelvys Helps Run Winning Streak to Five

Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA – Runelvys Hernandez made a strong rehab assignment start for Omaha Sunday at Rosenblatt Stadium, helping the Royals win their fifth straight, a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds.

Hernandez, who owned a 2.79 ERA in nine starts with Kansas City prior to elbow soreness, was a bit wild at the start. He walked Tike Redman leading off the game and, one out later, hit Tony Alvarez with a pitch. Mike Gulan followed by looping an 0-1 pitch into right-center field to drive in Redman and give Nashville a 1-0 lead. Hernandez then settled down to retire the next two batters in the first inning and 13 of the last 16 hitters he faced.

The Royals tied the game quickly in their first at-bat. Brian Harris led off with a triple down the right field line off Nelson Figueroa. It was the third straight game that Harris has led off with an extra-base hit. Julius Matos knocked in Harris with a grounder to short, which was booted by Aaron Holbert for an error that allowed Matos to reach base.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until one out in the bottom of the fifth, when Royals catcher Juan Brito took a 2-2 pitch from Figueroa (5-3) over the wall in left-center field for his first home run of the season.

That home run made a winner of Hernandez (1-0), who is expected to return to Kansas City next week. Les Walrond relieved Hernandez to start the sixth and allowed just one hit and no walks in three scoreless innings, striking out three.

Omaha left fielder Benny Agbayani, who came into the game in the throes of a 3-for-29 slump, capped a 3-for-4 day at the plate in the eighth with a three-run homer off Jim Mann. Nate Field pitched a perfect ninth as the Royals (28-30) matched their longest winning streak of the season and improved to 7-3 vs. Nashville (30-25).

Game 3 of the series is Monday at 7:05 p.m.: RH Matt Guerrier (0-4, 6.03) vs. RH Ryan Baerlocher (2-0, 4.85). Air time is 6:45 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
