Metairie, LA -- Eric Bruntlett scored on a sacrifice fly from Royce Huffman in the bottom of the eleventh as the New Orleans Zephyrs (33-24) defeated the Iowa Cubs (23-33) 1 to 0 on Sunday Night in front of 7,112 at Zephyr Field.
Bruntlett singled to left with one out in the eleventh off Cubs reliever Phil Norton. Henri Stanley singled to put runners on first and second. Bruntlett then stole third and scored on the fly out from Huffman.
The game was a pitchers duel as Cubs starter Matt Bruback retired the first 20 Zephyrs he faced. Huffmnan singled to break up the perfect game as Bruback only allowed one hit in eight innings of work walking none and striking out eight. Zephyrs starter Jared Fernandez was just as sharp pitching nine innings allowing only four hits walking none and striking out one. Bruntlett also singled in the ninth to finish 2-4 on the day.
Mike Gallo (2-0) picked up the win after relieving Rob Stanifer in the ninth with runners on first and third and with two outs and struck out Rich Donnels. Norton (1-1) suffered the loss pitching 2/3 innings allowing two hits on one run.
The series with the Cubs continues on Monday at 7:05 p.m.. Monday is Military Monday. Show your military I.D. and receive 50% percent off regular adult admission ticket price. Left hander Greg Miller (0-0, 3.60) is scheduled to start for the Zephyrs and Right hander Wilton Chavez (4-3, 4.11) for the Cubs.
