June 1, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release
The Edmonton Trappers endured a 47-minute rain delay and rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Memphis Redbirds 8-5 Sunday afternoon at TELUS Field. The win was the Trappers third in a row, their fourth in six games on this homestand and was the 13th come-from-behind victory of the season for the club. Edmonton has crept back to within two games of the .500 mark and can ensure that they will have a winning record for the fourth straight homestand with a victory in either of the final two games of this series. The Trapper bats have exploded in the last three games as the club has tallied 23 runs and banged out 42 hits. Edmonton had 15 hits on Sunday afternoon, including four doubles, a triple and a home run. Trapper outfielder Terrmel Sledge singled in his final at-bat in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest current streak in the Pacific Coast League. The Trappers and Redbirds continue this four-game series on Monday night at TELUS Field.
The Trappers got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning off Memphis starter Jason Ryan (4-2). With one out in the frame Valentino Pascucci reached on an infield single. He moved to third on a double by Anthony Medrano and scored on a two-base hit by catcher Scott Sandusky. Pitcher Tim Drew (1-6) followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Medrano from third. Drew cruised through the first two innings and retired the first seven batters he faced. Catcher Luis Rodriguez broke up the string of outs with a solo home run to right field and second baseman Marty Malloy followed later in the inning with a double to right center. Shortstop Jason Bowers cashed in Malloy with a double down the left field line to tie the score at two. There was no scoring in the fourth inning and the game was halted for 47 minutes in the top of the fifth because of rain.
The Redbirds got to Drew for two runs immediately after the game resumed. Rodriguez led off the inning with a base hit to right field. Ryan punched a single to center field to put runners at first and second and Malloy laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners up a base. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch, which also moved Ryan up a base and Bo Hart followed with a bunt single that scored the pitcher with the Redbirds' fourth run. Edmonton regained the lead in the sixth inning with five unearned runs off Ryan. Joe Vitiello led off with a single, but was thrown out trying to advance to third on a base hit by Edwards Guzman. The Redbirds appeared to be out of the inning when Pascucci grounded to third, but Guzman was safe on an errant throw and Medrano followed with a single that loaded the bases. Sandusky singled, scoring Guzman and Pascucci scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Matt Cepicky. Peter Bergeron then tripled to straightaway center field, plating Medrano and Sandusky. Bergeron scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch. Bo Hart and Edmonton pinch-hitter Jeremy Ware exchanged solo home runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring in the game. Julio Manon pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 12th save of the season for the Trappers.
