SEA DOGS SWEEP PONIES IN TWIN BILL: Portland edged Binghamton, 7-2, twice on Thursday at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs struck early in game one off of Joseph Shaw for three first-inning runs to lead wire-to-wire. The nightcap saw much of the same, with Portland plating seven runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Rumble Ponies have lost four straight games.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Andrew Church makes his sixth start of the season and third against Portland. The 23-year-old makes his first appearance since an April 30 loss at Akron, his final start before a brief DL stint. Church has allowed 6 ER across 8.1 IP in his two starts against Portland.
PLUMMETING PONIES: Thursday's losses sent the Rumble Ponies to 14-17, their first time being three games under .500 since April 19. At that time, Binghamton had just suffered a loss to New Hampshire, sinking to 4-7. The Rumble Ponies have not been four games below .500 this season.Â
SEA DOGS BARKING: Portland out-hit Binghamton, 24-6, in Thursday's doubleheader. The 24 hits allowed by Binghamton is not only the most in a two-game stretch this season, but the six Rumble Ponies hits are the fewest in a two-game stretch this season.
GO TO YOUR HOME: Binghamton finished the twin bill 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
NO HITS FOR YOU: Since Binghamton posted a season-best 13 hits on Tuesday, not one Rumble Pony has earned a multi-hit game. Binghamton has now gone three straight contests without a multi-hit effort. Prior to this stretch, the Ponies hadn't gone back-to-back games without someone collecting more than one hit.
BIG MAC: Jeff McNeil picked up one hit in two at-bats on Thursday, stretching his hitting streak to a season-best nine games. After a three-hit night in Akron on April 30, McNeil has garnered one hit in each of the last eight games. The infielder currently ranks 5th in Eastern League slugging percentage (.607) & T-3rd in runs scored (24).
TWIN BILL TORTURE: The Rumble Ponies have played two doubleheaders in the 2018 season and have been swept in both. Last season, the Rumble Ponies participated in 14 twin bills without being swept once. They completed five sweeps and split the other nine doubleheaders.
HAVE A HART: Portland RHP Kyle Hart is expected to make just the fifth Double-A start of his career and his first-ever against Binghamton.
UP NEXT: The Rumble Ponies continue their five-game series with the Sea Dogs on Saturday afternoon. Binghamton sends RHP Nabil Crismatt to the bump to face Portland RHP Kevin McAvoy. First pitch at Hadlock Field is slated for 1:00 PM.
