Akron RubberDucks News Release
The RubberDucks built a 4-0 lead, including a three-run home run by right fielder Jonathan Engelmann, and held off the Yard Goats' rally in a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon to take four of six in the series at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Akron was 7-5 on its 12-game road trip and is one game behind Richmond in the Southwest Division with six games left in the first half.
Turning Point
Akron held a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Right-hander Jerson Ramírez allowed a leadoff double to shortstop Hunter Stovall and infield single to pinch hitter Ezequiel Tovar, putting the tying runs on base. Ramírez struck out left fielder Daniel Montano before getting third baseman Aaron Schunk to ground into a fielder's choice that scored a run. Ramírez then struck out first baseman Michael Toglia, the potential winning run at the plate, to save the 4-3 win.
Mound Presence
In his second Double-A start, right-hander Gavin Williams worked around a hit and walk in the first inning. In the third inning, he allowed three hits, including Schunk's RBI single for the only run against Williams in three innings. He allowed four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Right-hander Carlos Vargas, making a major league rehab appearance in his first regular season game since 2019, pitched a scoreless fourth inning with one hit and one strikeout. Right-hander Robert Broom pitched a scoreless inning, left-hander Eli Lingos went two innings, allowing one run, and right-hander Brett Daniels pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Ramírez worked the ninth.
Duck Tales
Hartford left-hander Nick Bush had pitched 14 straight scoreless innings before Engelmann doubled in the second inning. Bush walked designated hitter Julian Escobedo, third baseman Raynel Delgado singled to load the bases, and second baseman Daniel Schneemann had an RBI groundout. In the third inning, shortstop Brayan Rocchio hit a leadoff single, left fielder George Valera walked with one out, and Engelmann hit a two-out, three-run homer to left field for a 4-0 lead.
