Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) June 1, 2014 - A three-run sixth inning helped the Akron RubberDucks fight off a one-run game as they defeated the Harrisburg Senators, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park.
The RubberDucks got off to a strong start after taking advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom of the first. A Bryan LaHair RBI single and a sac fly from Tony Wolters scored two runners in the inning, who were both walked. The RubberDucks went on to increase the lead to 3-0 in the following frame after Alex Lavisky reached on an error and came around to score on a Tyler Naquin single.
The Senators got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single from second baseman Cutter Dykstra, making it 3- 1.
After two scoreless innings, Michael Taylor launched a solo homer to center field in the sixth, making it a one-run game. The RubberDucks were quick to counter in their half of the sixth inning. Back-to-back leadoff doubles from Lavisky and Jordan Smith allowed Lavisky to cross home before Smith scored on a wild pitch. Akron recorded five total hits in the inning, contributing to three runs. The RubberDucks held a 6-2 advantage going into the seventh.
Harrisburg pinned on a run in the eighth, before reliever Tyler Sturdevant entered the game and retired the next five Harrisburg batters, recording three strikeouts in the process. Sturdevant was awarded his sixth save of the season in his 1.2 innings pitched.
Akron starter Joe Colon (5-2) picked up the win after six innings of work in which he allowed five hits and two runs while fanning four. Sunday's outing marks his 10th consecutive start in which he pitched at least five innings. Colon combined with the bullpen to strikeout 10 total batters.
The loss went to Harrisburg starter Paolo Espino (1-3) who pitched four innings, allowed three hits and three runs, two of which were earned.
Following an off day Monday, the RubberDucks will head to New Britain, Conn. to open a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats. The RubberDucks will send RHP Will Roberts (4-6, 4.29) to the mound for the 6:35 p.m. contest.
The probable starter for the Rock Cats has not been announced. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in the Akron area, and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is its 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks.
