RubberDucks Lose Close One to Senators, 3-2

(Harrisburg, PA) Harrisburg righthander Scott McGregor twirled seven strong innings Friday night, and the Senators scratched out enough offense to edge the Akron RubberDucks, 3-2, at Metro Bank Park.

The RubberDucks (60-54) have dropped the first two games of the series. While Akron was losing at Harrisburg, Richmond lost at Altoona, 7-3, so the RubberDucks remain 6 � games out of first in the EL West. Third-place Bowie was still playing at Binghamton at press time. The top two teams in the division make the post-season.

McGregor (2-1) retired the side in order five times in his seven innings of work. He walked none and fanned six. Released by the Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 16th, McGregor enjoyed his longest outing of the season for his new employer, the Nationals. After a pair of sub-par relief appearances against Akron after signing as a free agent, McGregor entered the starting rotation on June 23rd, and has been a solid addition to the Harrisburg staff. The Seantors (46-65) have now won four of his six starts.

If not for a slip by center fielder Michael Taylor, McGregor might have thrown a shutout. Jake Lowery led off the Akron third inning by launching a long fly ball to straightaway center field. Taylor, one of the top defensive outfielders in the league, turned to chase the ball down, but slipped and fell. The ball landed on the warning track and went for a triple for Lowery. Ronny Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Justin Toole followed with a triple to the right field corner, and scored on a bloop single by Tim Fedroff over a pulled-in infield to make it 2-0.

The Senators rallied for a run on a RBI single by Taylor in the fifth against Will Roberts (10-11), and then pushed two more across in the sixth on a wild pitch by Roberts and a sacrifice fly by Oscar Tejeda. Roberts worked six innings and allowed just five hits in the loss.

McGregor retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced, including the final seven in a row. Tyler Herron relieved McGregor in the eighth and tossed two scoreless innings for his fourth save. In the ninth, Herron successfully worked around a lead-off single by Anthony Gallas.

Akron shortstop Erik Gonzalez went 1-4, to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

The RubberDucks and Senators will play game three of the series Saturday night at 6:00. LHP Shawn Morimando (1-2, 3.00) is the scheduled starter for Akron, while RHP Paolo Espino (4-3, 4.25) is expected to get the ball for Harrisburg.
