Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed center Mitch Stephens ["STEEV ehns"]. Last season, Stephens (6'2"/175 lbs) led the Geneseo ["JENN eh SEE oh"] Ice Knights for the fourth consecutive season in scoring with fifty-five points (10g - 45a = 55pts) in twenty-six games. For his efforts last year, Stephens, who turned twenty-five on August 1, was selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Year and a First Team Division III RBK Hockey All-American, as well as the Male Athlete of the Year at Geneseo.
Prior to joining Geneseo, Stephens, who hails from Forrest, Manitoba, scored fifty-two goals and assisted on seventy nine others (131 points) in 119 games over two seasons of junior hockey in western Canada. While at Geneseo, Stephens racked up fifty goals and 117 assists (167 points) in 111 regular season collegiate games. During Stephens' four year stay at Geneseo, the Ice Knights compiled a regular season record of 67-33-11, while also capturing two SUNYAC championships and twice earning a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. In Stephens' junior year, 2005-06, he not only led the Ice Knights with sixteen regular season goals-seven of which were scored while the team was playing short-handed-twenty eight assists and forty-four points, Stephens was also selected as the Most Valuable Player in the SUNYAC Tournament. Stephens, however, saved at least some of his best for his final year, which proved to be his most productive as a college player, as his forty-five assists, fifty-five points and 2.12 points per game proved second best in all of D-III hockey.
The Royals' home opener is on Saturday, November 3, 2007, against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Royals' full Season Tickets and Total Choice Flex Plans are now on sale.
